We wanted to hold a kiting charity fund raiser just before Christmas a couple of years back. Came up with the idea for a kite-a-thon. Folks dressed up in strange seasonal outfits along with kiting gear. Neil Hutchinson of X-RATED Kiteboarding wanted to try something different. He rigged up a Hobie Cat with steering gear and a towing point for a kite. This is similar in respects to what you are talking about.

Neil and his baby. He and his water gnomes sailed this puppy down from Ft. Lauderdale to North Miami in some pretty light fitful winds.

Kent, Todd, Paula of Cabrinha and troops. We had a nice turn out for the event. Note to self: schedule adequate wind next time.

Remember when Erik Eck was lofted out in Oahu? Not sure but he might be drifting over or perhaps the real santa. We may never know, should ask Stacey with Best what was up.

the real thrill of sailing a cat is heelng it to ride on one pontoon. Salis generate the moment required for propper heeling, wnich a kite will not do satisfactorilly. Youll end up riding on both hulls and loosing speed potential.
I would suggest using a canoo like hull with an outrigger (for stability reasons) and a large dagger board for upwind sailing.
I hooked up my Maish Aero II 18m C-kite to a sunfish hull.... worked great after we got evryting dialed.

aeberl,

Can you describe your Sunfish set-up? I still have mine from my youth and would love to do some kite-boating. Photos or drawings would be great too if you have them. Thank you.

I just got the largest eyebolt you can crew into the top of the daggerboard (you have to pre-drill in order not to crack the board). If I am not mistaken it was a 3/8 x 4 bolt.
I also drilled a 1" hole into the dagger board just below the keel and drove a peg thru it in order to avoid the kite pulling the board out.
Than I tied the chicken loop of my kite to the eyebolt (I guess a shackle might have been a more elegant solution, but with a piece of 1/4" of nylon rope you can adjust the length of the setup and thus the distance between bar and deck), sat on the deck with one leg on each side of the shacke (ass apwind) and had a buddy attend the tiller/rudder.
This setup works well, however I would suggest attaching the kite further back on the center line of the boat, in order to have it turn into the wind when letting go of the tiller.
Make shure the peg is properly seated or your attachment point is sturdy enough to be loaded with the complete weight of the boat.
Have an experienced kiter and sailor at the helm, things could go wrong quickly if you don't have a good teamwork on board, specially with our setup that had the tendency of turning out of the wind on a loose tiller.

Got it, thanks. Do you think the attachment point for the bar could be the hook inside the cockpit? If you're used to the boat pointing into the wind with a loose tiller I could see that the attachment point would need to be slightly aft I guess?
