Crossing Cook Strait by kite

Postby Miss Lovely » Sun Dec 07, 2008 10:03 pm

Most New Zealanders cross the Cook Strait by ferry, wolfing down lukewarm mince pies on the Lido deck, and wondering when they will see them again (normally just out of the Wellington heads).

These two blokes are crossing the Strait by kite. They are raising funds for the Westpac rescue helicopter service, which shows a level of prescience not normally associated with the deranged. The Cook Strait is not very far - about 26kms, but it is notoriously rough. Every winter one of the Picton ferry captains (all ex fishermen) gets in trouble for not canceling the service in 8 meter swells.

here's the kiters' website; http://www.yakers.co.nz/ and here's the news story

Way cool! I hope they make it. :o

I'm also glad that they'll have a support boat. :thumb:

Looks like they are on their way. If you want to track their progress by some cool satellite technology, you can do it here:
