July means rainy season in Phuket, with westerly monsoons.
In those conditions, Nai Yang Beach in Phuket is the best place in the Land of Smiles .
Nice waves too.
Uncrowded and lovely atmosphere.

Alex, what are the chances for wind over 15kn? When you write "rains" how often is it raining?

When it's windy, it is mostly above 15 knots (15-25). Last year we've had such winds the two weeks during the was there (July-August). Statistically, perhaps 50% of the time July-August.
Rain comes and goes. You get a trough line getting through, with heavy squalls, then it's over and you can resume. Some riders actually do go and enjoy when it's howling and raining hard. BTW they are the ones likely to skew the accidents statistics and make the sport considered dangerous.

little hijack of this thread - but are there any good flatwater spot in July/August, I am stoping through for 6 weeks to learn to kitesurf and get some beach time.
Were is a good place area wise to get accomodation?? flat water option to learn, wind of course, waves options would be good as i get better and also to actually surf. And ofcourse some good places to drink/eat/party.

I am going by myself july 11 - August 21 (Anyone wanna come? its offseason and cheapish)

Short update,

I came on Thu. and staying at the Nai-Yang beach. It is 5 min drive from the airport.

There are two kite shops here and several bars but not to the level of Patong. The bay is about 1kn wide and waters are flat although you can find nice wave if you go deeper to the north (there is a large reef there that is deep enough for kiting.

Cost of living is like other places in Thailand - you can make a good living for $US50.

HOWEVER - NO WIND! and the forecast doesn't look good. The locals say it is usually windy at this time of the year.

Looking at windfinder weather maps, Zanzibar looks better (actually most of south-east Africa).

That's all for now. Hope to return with better news.

The west side of south Thailand looks good according to the maps but i couldn't find any report of specific kitesurfing locations to go to.

i kno0w you left that day but it came in the day after, been blowing 15 - 28 everyday since that, looking good for the next week also, lots of rain in between but wgho cares once your out on the water and wet already.

I think you made the sacrifice of leaving that brought the wind.
