alvor advice

Postby fdvj » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:33 pm

I was hoping to get some up to date info for launch sites and live wind sites. I will also be with the family, all non kiters and i am hoping that there will be someone to help land and launch. We will be going at he end of may/begining of june so what wind can i expect and what kind of wetsuit would i need. All advice appreciated

hallo

sorry for the late post. i was there last summer (july/august) on the lagoon. the wind fills in from noon and whistles down from the north/north west. i was out on a 12m but will drop to 9m this year - as most are in the afternoon. the lagoon can be done at all tides, as it never really dries out but the island gets bigger! you have a bit of a drive through palmares golf course, over a very bumpy/car wrecking strip to get to the lagoon. it's very walkable if not drivable. the beach around the lagoon is ok, but small BUT hop over the sand dune.....happy days. take a wind break!! 3mm shorty. watch out for the squid.....

Perfect description from headzup for the Lagos spot! :)

But Alvor village is on the East side of the river and usually the winds are much more constant due to the wind direction there (on shore, not side off over some hills as in the Lagos side) and you have plenty of low depth water to ride in high tide, and also in low tide NW, riding at NW of the island (carefull with strong current towards the seas when tide is going down!

There you can leave the car around 900m away and walk to the spot, or drive trough a dirt road. They haven't been bodering anyone yet, but sometimes in the Summer cops don't let cars go till the spot.

Here are some pics that may help!

By the way, new road due to works in the dune!

Have fun and if you need any advice on activities, lodging, night fun or just some tips, give us a call! :thumb:

Hi again!

The sun is to be shinning during the next days, but the water (as it is a river) is not as warm as in the Algarve warm Mediterranean beaches.
I would advice a good, sealed, long 3/2 or a 4/3 wetsuit to have confortable 2 hour sessions! We have some NPX's that you can try here :thumb:

I'll be there for the next weeks, and now the wind is calling me! I'm already late! It has been blowing about 20 knots since 1pm! :jump:

For any advice just give a call on 926 221 981

Hi guys.

just opening this thread up again as i am hoping to get to Portugal over new year to escape the snow. I know conditions may not be perfect but i am bringing my kites anyway just in case. Hoping to stay in Lagos and kite in Alvor. Have only been kiting since may this year and it would be good to know if a few guys will out and about if conditions are good.

Will probably hire a car as well so will be able to travel around if wind conditions suit somewhere else.

Would be great to hear from some local guys before i arrive.
