RRD Obsession 2010

Postby mocolombo » Thu Sep 24, 2009 7:38 pm

Any review about this kite? Specially in big sizes, 12 and 13,5. I´d like to know the wind range of these kites, anyone?
Cheers!

Funny. I've tried the 10.5 and 13.5.
The 10.5 is a good bit faster, but just as stable.
Also, it generates more power even though it has a shorter leading edge this year. I think this is because it flies faster. I definitely felt like I was going faster on the water. Jumping is good, unhooked is great, kiteloops are punchy and predictable.
The 13.5 is right on the cusp of a big kite in terms of feel. It still gets the small guys upwind and has tons of power. I have an instructor down here (so cal) who wont let go of my demo :) It's fast for a big kite but it's still a big kite.
Haven't tried my 12 meter, but from what I hear it's like the 10.5- faster and punchier.

Bar pressure is lighter than last year, but bar feel is still excellent and the kites have more of an axial turn than a pivot around the center kind of turn. This is what lends them punch in a k/l.
Also, the people who try them are hanging on to them, which is a great sign.

I have ridden the 12m. I was using a 132x41cm Poison twintip and the low end for me on this board (having fun, unhooked moves, and small jumps) is about 11-12 knots (13-14mph) in flat water with no current and I weigh about 83kg (183lbs). You could probably ride it in 1-2 knots less with a surfboard/skimboard in steady wind. The upper end seems close to 18-20knots (20-23mph), maybe a little more. Very fun kite for a 12m. Turns fast for a 12m, super stable, excellent pop, great unhooked, and jumps really well. Kiteloops are nice and smooth and more powerful compared to the 2009 Obsession. Haven't ridden the 13.5. I find I only need the 12m for my biggest size. I have the 5, 7, 9, 10.5m also. Seems the small sizes (9m and smaller) have been slowed down a little (but still plenty fast), and the larger sizes (10.5m and bigger) are a little faster compared to 09. Great kites for 2010, and the graphics/colors are better this year :D

I've been riding the 09 12m and 9m, and a naish 6m. As i only use a surfboard now am going to drop to two kites, the 10.5m and 7m. Absolutely loved the 09 Obs so can't wait to try the 2010. I must say i'm not so keen on the new graphics, they're not bad, but the 09 was the best looking kite, but i guess it had to change!

This is hands down my favorite kite of all--the 12 meter--for 10-20 knots. Great low end performance, fast turning, and great hangtime. It is RRD's high performance kite, but it has enough depower for beginners as well. My only point is that you should think of the 12 meter as equal to a 14 meter standard 2010 bow kite because of its grunt.
If you are looking for an Obsession with the widest wind range, I would get a 9 meter because in light wind you can always use a surfboard.

I ride the 12 and 9 with a Nobile fifty50 139. Extremly good low end. Yesterday I had good power with the 12 in 15-16 knots with boots and the other day I had a great time in 12 knots with a skim.

It really is a versetaile kite and i think you will be very happy with it. Does everything. Wake, freestyle, looping.. you name it!

The flying lines on the new V.2 Global bar is awesome. No stretch at all!

Relaunch is super easy, crashed it yesterday and when I finally got my head out of the water, it was in position to get me going again!

RRD has been around for a while but with the obsession the really nailed it!

Give it a go, you will enjoy the kite in the bigger sizes!

I owed the '09 10.5m Obs and loved it, however I always felt that the bar needed improving. I was waiting for the new 2010 bar to be released, hoping that they would be as evolutionary with their design as they are with their kites, but sadly I was left dissapointed. It looks like they haven't rea;lly changed anything. soo... 2007

Naa, dont agree there, the only thing that is a bit anoing is that the safety line is dangling around, but that is it, and that is a minor thing! I like the new bar :-)

By the way, what kind of improvements were you looking for?

I just purchased a used 2010 13.5 RRD Obsession along with a 2009 Ocean Rodeo SLE bar 2.0. I had my first opportunity to try it yesterday and was not able to get the kite to fully power up even with the depower line all the way out and the bar pulled all the way in. The kite only has one set of knots on both the leading and trailing lines so I'm not sure how to adjust this.

Please advise.

ps: I checked how the trailing lines are connected to the control bar (under the foam) and they are already on the last knot (shortest line).

pps: Love the kite so far!
