October 1…The WINNER IS

With 11 weeks of racing in the bag, the winner of the 2009 Cabrinha Race series will not be decided until the twelfth and final night. By my calculations, unofficial of course, the series stands as follows:
Wasson (Ozone) is in the lead with 9 points, followed by a three way tie for second with Headington (Ozone), Kafka (Cabrinha) and Stefaans (OR) all having 16 points. Headington and Kafka have the same number of 1st, 2nds, 3rds and 4ths, so Headinton breaks the tie by virtue of besting Kafka in week 11(Kafka was in Fiji), and Kafka breaks the tie with Stefaans by virtue of having more 1st place finishes. So, if the finale week is cancelled due to no wind, the final results will be as above.

Week 11 saw 30 racers compete on 11s-14s with the guys on the larger kites overpowered on the upwind legs. As the racers rigged their kites, Anita was reading 5-15 and TI (indication of the wind outside) also dropped to 15. But at the start of the first race, TI picked up to 20 and the winds on the course averaged 15-25, and built a little more for the second race. In addition, the fog continued to thicken as the racing continued to the point that I could not see the committee boat at the start of race two, and could not see the racers on the course nor at the finish. However, I could hear the finishing horn which indicated the racing was close.

Again for the second week in a row, there was a three way tie for first with Gebardt (3,1), Headinton (1,3) and Stefaans (2,2) all with 4 points. Gebi broke the tie with Headinton having a first in the last race, and Headingtion broke the tie with Stefaans by virtue of having a first in the first race, So the final order of finish was Gebi, Geoff, and Stefaans.
Wasson and Kafka were on their way to Fiji and did not compete.

If there is wind for the finale on October 1, and the forecast is for light wind, then the winner of the 2009 Cabrinha Race Series will be up for grabs by either Headinton or Stefaans who go into the night tied, and with Headinton holding the tie breaker. Wasson and Kafka will still be in Fiji and will be scored a DNC which will impact their season scores significantly….Wasson will end the season with 22 points, and Kafka 23. Headington and Steffans enter the final night each with 16 points. So, assuming neither of them are protested and lose, the winner for the night will probably be crowned the 2009 Champion. Rob Kindt (Ozone) and Eric Due (Cabrinha) have 33 and 35 respectively and can’t catch any of the top four, so they will be battling it out for 5th.

The finale will also determine the winner of the 3rd Cabrinha Mini Series. Going into the final races, Stefaans has the lead with 4 points, followed by Headington with 5, Kindt with 9 and Due with 11.

After the races at the St. Francis, we will conduct our final free raffle for the participants and provide awards to the winners of the mini series. Also, the Cabrinha Race Series awards party has been changed to OCTOBER 23…Be there as there will be a SPECIAL PRIZE for one of the participants…but you must be present to win.

The Cabrinha Race Series is sponsored by Cabrinha, Adventure Sports, Inc., Ozonetravel, Adventure Sports Miami, and hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club
