Can you actually build one that performs as well as those high end boards on the market?
I know I can build one, I just don't know if it would work well and be worth the effort.

Assume I have a decent vacuum table and some wood working ability and experience with epoxy resin.

so much fun building your own board. who knows you might be really good at it.

model it off something production you like, with similar shape, sizing, as like a basis to start from.

if you can't be bothered with the time and effort it takes then just buy a good board, but it is very possible to make your own board that performs very well.

Pdkite is right on. With the skills you mentioned you should be fine. You will need to source a good core material like corecell and figure out how thick it needs to be which determines the flex more than the anything else.
A custom board done right isbetter than most of the expensive name brand production stuff which are more about how they printed the graphics than good materials.
A wrapped rail board uses the least amount of different materials so may be the best place to start. For hard rails using abs or similar is the most common approach but you need to source that too and typically you need to buy a large sheet and cut to strips. Also the poured rail concept works well.

You can jsut pour rail onto your core with Epoxy resin, it flexes MORE than enough in order to be usable. You can add coulouring pigment, and even fibers if you like.
