What Kite together with Gaastra GXR 16.5

Postby mede » Tue Apr 29, 2003 10:15 am

hello everybody,

last week, i was kiting in safaga, where i had the opportunity to try my new gaastra 16.5.

i really love this kite :P

even if i was astonished how long i could hold this kite (up to good 5 bf), when the wind got even stronger, i had to change to my smaller arc840.

i really liked the arc for learning when i was a beginner.
but with 6bf, the arc was just lifting me (75kg) off the ground. starting the kite downwind is also a pain in the a..., when the wind is so strong.

so i need another tube that fits together with the gaastra 16.5

now, folks, your turn:
which is the best choice here? a 10 or a 12?
someone has tested the scoop, wook, gxr, co2 and can compare them?
what would you recommend me?

thanx a lot for your help

kind regards

mede

That's an easy one, mede... 8)

Go for the GXR 12.0, it's one of the best of the GXRs and it's the best fit for the 16.5! The 16.5 is fun up to 5.5 bft (gusts of 6 no problem), the 12.0 is well powered at 5 bft, and is comfortable to fly up to 6.5 (after that it gets "sportif", but gusts of 7 are no problem, I even managed a 10 min phase of 7.5 shower gusts, still in control although being pushed downwind slowly)...

GXR 10.0 would have no overlap at all with the GXR 16.5 and you would find much less days to use it.

Click here for a report on my first experiences with GXR 16.5 and 12.0 last October...

There is no best choice - its your choice.

If you are 100% certain you will only have a 2 kite quiver - go for the 10m2.

Otherwise, a 12m2 would be much better IMO.

With a 10m2 you will clearly feel a gap sometimes.
Although the kites just overlap - this is not enough. You will often feel you need one size in between.
So a 12m2 is the better choice.

Then you can buy an 8m2 one fine day maybe...

I've tried the GXR's, Wook, and Skoops.

Different kites all of them.
GXR the most powerful I think, and a smooth kite, but a bit hard to handle in the upper end.
Skoop and Skoop2 and Wook has good range, and the Wook is clearly the easiest to fly and relaunch.
Skoop's are more direct and fast.

Choose whatever you like - GXR12, Skoop2 11.5, Wook12.

hi wolfgang & peter,

thank you for the information :D

one more question: are the flying characteristics of the 12.0 GXR about the same as the ones of the 16.5?

i ask because i heard from some people that the 12.0 would not be as good as the 16.5. as i have no opportunity to test fly the kite, i have to rely on experiences from other people.

thanx in advance

Hi mede,

the 12.0 is somewhat faster of course, reacts faster, but if you don't like it you can modify that to some extent by fixing the backlines at the inner connectors, it also has max. depower efficacy with this trim...

I don't see why the 12.0 should be not as good as the 16.5 (I heard people say the opposite by the way), maybe it depends on what kind of wind conditions people prefer to kite in - wind around 4.5/5.0 (16.5) or wind around 5.5/6.0 (12.0)...
