Race Board Fins: Bigger ones Front or Back?

Postby ANTONIO GUARDIOLA » Fri Jan 29, 2010 1:33 pm

I'd appreciate your comments and feed back
For a race / freeride light wind ( not for real racing)
1 - should the bigger fins ( if any are bigger than the others ) be the front ones or the back ones ( in a quad set up)
2 - Considering you could tune the position ( back and forth ) with a us box.
on witch ( front or back fins ) would be better to have that option?

cheers António

Usual setup I have seen and experienced is bigger fins in the front.

For your second question, I would not know. On my board, I can adjust both.

Hmmm, those testing prototypes here, and all raceboards I've seen, are NOT having the big ones in front :-?

Sometimes in really light wind, the front are the same size as the rear.

In more wind you reduce the front ones in size, in order to keep control and still be able to push on the rear fins and have low drag (less wetted board surface).

I would no doubt choose the rear fins as the "tuning" set with the fin box, if I had to choose.

Simply because they are the main fins, and you can tune so your stance will be good and relaxed - instead of moving your rear footstrap back and fourth, which would be the only other option if having a fixed finbox

thank you very much Peter
that was exactly the kind of comment / advice I was looking for.
(I read your posts regarding the north2010ltd hence the PM)
what fins are you using now with the north2010ltd in light wind?

One think i didn't understand you say :_those testing prototypes here, and all raceboards I've seen, are NOT having the big ones in front.
not? you mean because they are canted??? ( rrd, rogue wave, airush sector, the fuminis...)
( only north2010ltd comes with smaller front fins )

thanks again
António

uf!
just reread the " North Race LTD 2010 ? " again
somehow i had the impression that you ( Peter frank ) concluded that was best thing was to get the bigger fins.
Now I see it was the other way around...
Have to rethink the fin thing
cheers
António

As a builder of race boards myself I can tell u that the questiom u asked has not ben answered yet however about freeride types the larger fin in front does 2 things first it enables u to spread out your weight on both feet rather than most on your rear foot and it enables u to pivot or turn the board more off of the front fins being the larger so it turns easier
