Best places to learn in Mexico or the Caribbean in April?

Postby tania » Wed Jan 27, 2010 7:27 pm

Hey everyone,
A couple of mates and myself are planning on heading to Mexico or the Caribbean April 7-14 for some lessons. It's the only time we can all get off, so we're pretty much stuck with those dates. Does anyone have any good suggestions for locations, given that we're looking for somewhere that would be good for beginners? It looks like the Yucatan pensinsula has good winds around this time (Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Xpu-Ha, Isla Blanca etc?), or do you think the Caribbean would be a better bet? Caberete is clearly set up with lots of schools, although I'm a little nervous about the winds (or lack thereof) in April, and then also the fact that the waves could make learning a bit difficult. Playa Copal in Costa Rica also seems like it might be a good option, although it's a little more difficult/expensive to get to.

South Padre Island in Texas also could be an option, but the lessons and then cost of accommodation etc make it pricier than Mexico/Caribbean.

Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated!!
Cheers,
Tania

I have been doing quite a bit of investigation and it appears Playa Copal has a bit more wind gust than some areas and strong winds morning to night.

Playa Del Carmen looks consistent and decent around Tulum. My wife was in Playa last Feb and said there was kiter out every day....

I am going in March and thinking Playa Del Carmen looks like the spot to go or the Blue Dream Hotel in Playa Copal Costa Rica.

Truth is I think they will all be good and you'll be forced to try harder and learn faster....

In July and August one of the best places is Nitnat on Vancouver Island ....but bring a wet suit.

Cheers

Tania,
Playa del Carmen looks like your best option with still some very good wind in April, warm water and a Kiteboarding School right in the heart of Playa del Carmen.
Check http://pdckiteboarding.blogspot.com or www.pdckiteboarding.com .
The school is located at the beach of the Sandos Playacar Resort and has it s own mile long private white sandy beach. IKO certifcation courses are provided by experienced IKO instructors and the latest EPIC Kiteboarding gear is used for courses and rental.
Get more infos at pdckiteboarding@gmail.com
Saludos.

Hi Tania,

Tulum is defintely a gorgeous spot but I dont really know about the wind there. I think they have a pretty limited season.
Of course no one can give a 100% forecast on the wind but I think Cabarete is the most consistent of all those spots you consider. The last days were really windy here and it looks like a great season. Apart from the kitesurfing Cabarete has a lot of things to offer, so even on a no-wind day you can have a lot of fun here. In April the surfing is also very good, which is a great thing to do in the mornings before the wind comes.
Dont worry about the waves, on kitebeach you will have flat water and also very professional and good kite lessons.
If you have any more questions about Cabarete just drop us a note.

Best regards from Hooked Cabarete
