Board number 2.

Postby wavebreaker » Mon Feb 22, 2010 1:28 am

Well first board is off the vacuum table and into the paint area now. So while i wait between paint coats sanding etc i decided to have a kick at my second build. Not one to sit idle.

I read a forum topic some where in my travels about a fellow who had made a hollow Mako copy of OR's popular board. I will have to dig around see if i can find the forum it was from.

Anyway the hollow construction technique got my interest so i decided to create one.
Plus i had decided to try out several different styles of building to see which i liked better.

Anyway back to the point.

I had read the hollow boards HWS, where mostly drawn up using a program called Aku Shaper great program. http://aps3000.com/ I hope im allowed to post links if not SORRY.

Another Fellow also built a hollow mako using 1/8" plywood strips for skin.

http://www.kitestrapless.com/forum/view ... 2a69090aec

This fellows post is a good one shows how to use the basics of AKU , again with the link

This building technique is not for the faint of heart.
So i did my layout and playing with AKU developed my patterns printed out a crap load of paper and began.

Used 1/8" backer board for my templates, transferred templates to my strongback material 1/4"
baltic birch ply.

Set it up notch cut ribs to center stringer and jigged up on building table.
Start to this stage about 6 hours, took a little bit to get used to AKU.

Anyway some pics of the ribs/stringer set up ready to start striping. going to use 3/16" bead and cove cut cedar strips.

Cheers and happy building. Yea the Dogs a Ham loves getting into the pictures. When he is not stealing my wood bits that is.

So you are not wasting any time I see.
I hope you don't mind a few questions... one day, when I'm 80 I may try this.... lol... not... maybe 81

1. can you take a picture of how your strong ribs intersect. I understand the concept of notching but seeing a close up would be very helpful.

2. I noticed you use many clamps to hold the cedar strips to your strong ribs, or skeleton as I would call it, but you have no clamps holding the cedar together, is this because it was already glued, cured and sanded or are these individual strips....

Sincerely

Pete

Laughingman

The strips are bead and cove (canoe cut)
so they interlock on edge just need to hold down the edges to keep everything in contact.

81 is to far off I'm 51 so 30 years short of that :)
sorry crappy pictures my camera hates close ups :)

Cool.
Could you keep us updated on developments please ?
I also shape boards and find it interesting the different materials one can use.
Here you find nothing so have to come up with funny ideas to build (like stripping windsurf boards for exemple).

I second that, very cool, and please please please keep sharing. The information thus far is so valuable to those of us that are in awe of your abilities. I have followed other hollow construction threads but they always seem to leave out a thing or two almost as if to confuse the readers....lol, it works by the way.

I am really looking forward to see how you manage when your strips get to the edge, and how you join the top and the bottom and surfaces to form a rail.... Please take lots of pictures of this process, documentation of this seems to be missing in all hollow construction threads.

Thanks again Wavebreaker

Sincerely

Pete

hi wavebreaker.
I like your current project.
i've built a couple of "strip-build" thingys, but no kite boards
Typically, the framework is much more substantial than the stringer and ribs you are building around.

I'm just guessing, but
you may find that you need to balance the build by alternating the strips between the top and bottom, before progressing to the edges on bottom (or top) side only
this way the stringer will not be required to provide all the bending forces needed to maintain your design rocker. With strips top and bottom the stringer needs only to provide shear resistance.

good luck/ good job.
