2010 Cabrinha Caliber vs Underground Styx

Postby dpca10 » Mon May 24, 2010 6:57 am

Throw me a bone, there is so little to help me choose between these boards.
I ride mostly freestyle in moderate chop, weigh about 190lbs. Half my tricks hooked half unhooked, loops rolls etc.. My two boards now are the 133x42 rrd poison with straps and a 138x42 lf influence in boots. Im looking for a replacement for the rrd to ride in straps, after blowing out an insert.. the rocker on the influence ridden in boots has poor upwind, want to save that board for flat water and grab an all around freestyle stick. I'm thinking the 136x42 caliber or maybe the 133x41 vs the Styx in 135. I even considered another poison or perhaps a nobile nhp in the 137x44. I want a board good in chop, good pop, great upwind and especially no face spray. Hope someone has an opinnion

Hay buddy can't help with the underground but if your looking for a good all rounder than the NHP is a fucking great deck. Good pop.great in the chop. Great up wind. But in a big swell you will get more salt water sprayed in your face that a porn star at an orgy.At unhooked stuff it's ok but than agan that's what's your other deck is for.
I hope that helps but knowing my advice it probley won't.

dpca10,
The 2010 NHP is that board which can handles all conditions exceptionally well. Where it really stands out is when seas are extremely choppy/sloppy as it gives loads of control, very little spray, solid upwind. When others are complaining of the chop, you will be smiling!

137x44 just seems super wide on the NHP, I can't believe with 44cm width I wouldn't get blasted with spray in the face. People are recomending to go up a size for the NHP because of the rocker.

Anyon on the Styx or the Caliber???????

I'm 145lbs and I'm riding the Cabrinha Caliber 133x41(2010) and the Nobile NHP 3D 131x40(2010).
Both boards are very good! Best board I know so far from Cabrinha and from Nobile as well. Because I have most of the time some chop and because I'm using contact lenses the spray issue for me is really important. Both boards are riding almost without spray much better than most of the boards in the market right now. Think that the companies tried to get the most of performance out of their shapes and have forgotten the spray and that perfect clean flat water spots are hard to find.
The Caliber has a more classic progressive rocker line and is build in a simple construction of wood core, glass and epoxy. For this reason the flex is nothing special for my weight. It could be slightly more flexible to get the most out of the very good shape especially when it is choppy. I'm using the board on the ocean for freestyle and freeride where I can hit with full speed the wave without being catapulted. It's fun and a very predictable board.
The nobile has an exotic rockerline and a more sophisticated flex. It's very comfy and my favorite choice for the flat water spots with chop. Both boards are riding good upwind but I have the impression that the nobile is slightly better in this point because of the concave bottom and the very thin rails. The nobile also keeps me going earlier but is not so predictable as the caliber and not so skatey. There is another board with the same rocker line from Nobile called the 50Fifty with smaller fins. Which seems to be made more for the bigger guys. This is very modern concept and it looks so good that I have to try it. Can't tell anythink about it yet. Because of the extra length should be even faster in the chop.
I love both boards and both boards can be ridden a size bigger without any control problems. Try them if you can!

Caliber can not compete w/ Styx. I'm just a regular guy but willing to bet my life on it :).

Interesting statement, but not very helpful. Do you ride the styx. There is probably less information on this board in particular than than any I have mentioned. So if you have experience with it spill the beans.

:))))))))))))))))))))) Then you should buy the Caliber now. Couple months later, try out the Styx. That's my sincere and honest recommendation for you.

Good luck :))))))))))))))))))))

I own a 135 Styx and I personally love it but I haven't ridden the Caliber for comparison. All I have around me is chop and it works well through it, feels really good for going upwind and it has great pop.
