How-to Video for Boardbuilding

Postby foam-n-fibre » Sun Jun 27, 2010 12:30 pm

Hi guys, I finally got around to putting together a video of the way I've been building boards for the past 4 years or so. Not the only way to do it, but should be good for those getting started

Poured rails and the core shape

The rocker table

Glassing and vacuum bagging and finishing

Hope it helps!

Hi Stan. I've learned more about kiteboard building from Stan than anyone else out there. Hope to catch a session on your island this summer Stan!

Good call, thanks for posting. I've bookmarked it for the future.

With the cost of new boards I think I'll be turning to home made boards soon... unless of course I get a job or win the lottery. I've had good success with my first light wind ply board. It's still going strong and works beautifully (which I still can't believe).

Given the simple shapes of some of the TT's out there I think making a board for moderate to strong winds might be just as successful. I currently use an 09 LF recoil which looks pretty simple, not much concave (if any) and simple straight forward rocker, thin edges. I'm sure I could make one just as light, with similar edges and probably even more flex.

Hey Frankm, you can be sure that a board made the wayI do it will be lighter than every production board on the market. Adding the cotton does add a bit, but it's still lighter. But, I've yet to have me or anyone else doing huge megaloops or pushing it to the level of the top few percent of riders. No broken boards yet. Also production boards might be tougher than my layup if you hit rocks and things like that.

Yeah Stan, we're always watching the forecast. Almost went to Sandbanks this morning by the forecast backed off a lot.

No idea about printing on cotton - just go hunt through the discount bin at the local fabric shop. There's usually a lot there.

Sure, cotton on the bottom should work, but it does add more weight, so I've only done it on top.

The rocker table is just an outer rectangle with a lot of cross pieces from side to side and they support the big flat piece of wood, which the plexi sits on. Some guys have it all adjustable. I just use shims to change the height and screw down through the shims to hold it in place. You can screw or bolt the frame together in many different ways.

Single to double concave?? Not sure, that sounds like it is a lot more complicated than the method I'm using. Maybe if you glued to the plexi in the middle and held it down in the middle somehow, then supported it further out with the long wood strip that gives the concave it might work. Sounds like too much trouble to me!

Has anyone here ever tried making 2 identical boards but one with a single concave and one with a double concave? I'd be interested to hear if it is more than just fashion. :)
