Nood Kiteboard Course Racing Wraps Up Koch Wins It

Day One Report and a huge photo gallery.

The San Francisco edition of the Sperry NOOD Regatta kicked off today in fine fashion. Ever the innovators this year’s regatta is breaking new ground and features kiteboards racing in one the bigger sailboat regattas on the bay. Day 1 Report and Massive Photo Gallery.
The morning session belonged to the Hobie catamarans followed by a mid afternoon racing for the rest of the fleet. Early morning conditions featured blue skies, 15-20 mph winds, slack water and a fog bank just hanging over the Golden Gate Bridge. The Kiteboards were set up last on the day with a 3 o’clock start and by then the weather was quite a bit different. With the flood tide having kicked in the fog bank was tractor beamed in to Alcatraz and the wind picked up in to the 20-25mph range. Pretty ideal conditions for getting off two kiteboard races and that’s just what happened for the 13 boards in attendance.

Race one saw most of the fleet start on starboard with three brave souls making a run at a port start. Unfortunately not only was the starboard end favored so was the left side of the course. Heading out in to the bay was heading out in to the flood. The entire course was set above the starting line allowing the race committee to get off multiple start sequences while races were concurrently being run. A weather mark with and offset buoy taken to starboard and leeward gates were featured for the traditional one lap sausage course with a finish line upwind above the windward mark. Adam Koch got a great start on starboard with Chip Wasson just below him (photos below). From there Adam never looked back to take the win. Steffans Viljoen showed pre race PBR hydration techniques really do work and posted a second place finish while Chip Wasson rounded out the top three.

Race two (start pictured below) saw a diminished fleet as the windy weather took its toll. John Gomes was amongst the casualties as he was returning for the start of race 2 he took what looked to be a normal fall. His kite however was not responding as it lurched out the water and slammed back down repeatedly ultimately tea cupping down wind and forcing him to miss the start. With the entire fleet starting on starboard this time it was Adam Koch who again sailed a solid race for the win. Joey Pasquali picked up where he left off in last night’s Friday night racing coming in for second place. Wasson again took third.

Koch has what looks to be a lock on the title but Sunday's start is at 1pm and should feature totally different conditions. Three other kiters are tied for second with six points. Wasson, Viljoen, and Pasquali.

Day 2 Report
Building on a successful day 1 the second day of NOOD San Francisco was even better. With the fog bank fully pulled back behind the Golden Gate Bridge by the start of racing the weather was a good 5 degrees warmer while winds, although lighter than yesterday, continued in the 15-25mph range.

A merciful race committee moved the course up closer to the bridge after experiencing a wild and crazy day one blow fest down at Blossom Rock. A 1pm start and a shortened course also meant a more subdued day for the kiters and allowed for 3 races to be held.

Race one saw the fleet spllttiing in half. Half the fleet sailed out to the middle of the bay on one big long tack while the other half worked up the shore line of San Francisco hoping to minimize the impact of the day’s flood tide. Making between 8-10 tacks each these racers were gambling the relief from the flood would outweigh all the tacking. Leading the field up the shore line was Adam Koch closely followed by Chip Wasson. Both are pictured above. Adam in red and Chip in Yellow. Both were whipping tacks with impressive speed. On the outside of the course Joey Pasquali was leading the fleet. Pasquali tacked over and got to the windward mark just after Koch. Both Koch and Wasson were hampered by a large dead zone (pictured below) half way between shore and the windward mark that allowed Pasquali to make up significant ground. Koch never relinquished his lead and Pasquali was able to get the better of Wasson who came in third.

Race two again saw Koch and Wasson working the shoreline with Koch again out front. (Pictured below). Wasson however learning from last race a took a few extra tacks to come in the shoreline above Anita rock giving him a better angle for crossing the dead zone which by this time had actually grown. It was a smart move and allowed Wasson to overtake Koch; a lead he never relinquished. Koch took second while Pasquali (pictured below) came in third.

Race three and the wind had backed down a bit. In all honesty I took off to rig up my formula gear. Shameless plug for the upcoming US Windsurfing National Championships this July 20-24 at San Francisco’s Crissy Field. Koch took first, Wasson second, and Pasquali third.

Notable performance of the regatta came from Kasey Campbell (pictured below #17 chasing #19 Nils Stolzlechner) who just kept sailing faster. His 9-5-5-4-4 scoring line showed he prefers the lighter breeze but can be a threat to podium future races.
1. Adam Koch
2. Chip Wasson
3. Joey Pasquali
