how do u avoid excessive airline charges to carry your gear?

I wish to buy a lockable case, probably similar to a samsonite hard plastic luggage case, that will take my board & 2kites etc while taking flights overseas.
What do you use?
What do you recommend?
Where did you buy it & how much?
Have you any photos you could put on here?
