Has anybody done the journey from San Jose by bus to Bahia Salinas/Playa Copal with kite gear? I was wondering how practical it is and how long it takes.... or is the bus a dumb idea? Are there big comfy air con busses on this route or is it the chicken-bus? I'd be flying international into SJO and trying to work out whether to bring a board (which means paying $$$ each way from Europe) or renting a board there and just bringing the kites. But after renting for 3 weeks or so, I could have bought a new board, just the extra hassle and cost of having to sell a kidney in order to pay the theiving airline fees.
Any advice?

I've done the bus trip....and its pretty easy. There's one bus you take from San Jose to La Cruz (basically, its the bus to the Nicaraguan border....La Cruz is about 20 mins south of the border). I think its a five hour bus trip...but they stop at a little roadside place for bathrooms and food. Then in La Cruz, you can either stay in town (its about 30 mins to the kite beach...but is the place with a couple big grocery stores, banks, etc), hop on a bus to get to the kite hotels nearer the beach (Blue Dreams, Bob's places, etc), or grab a cab from there. Your gear is under the bus and perfectly safe the whole time. There is a chance they will charge you a couple extra bucks for your bag...but nothing near rental costs.
Take a look at flights into Liberia too...its only an hour and a half bus trip from LIberia to La Cruz.
Enjoy your trip. I stayed with Nicola in Blue Dreams and had a blast. Also was windy about 28 days out of 30...but bring tiny kites! I flew 3, 5, and 7.5 m kites the whole time I was there.
