Thanks Flyrob, that's great news.
I believe I learn to be a safer kiter by reading about these type of incidents, but I dont like how much it costs most of the victims, so its great to hear that Yurii has been one of the very lucky ones.

@Flyrob, that's great news
Thanks for posting this thread. I know a little more about brain injuries as a result of it.
It's very convincing and I'll be picking up a helmet the first chance I get.

Good "middle". I wish Yurii the best ending as well. Hope the recovery continues to be complete and quick.
I kite in the midwest US. I've been windsurfing forever, and one of the benefits of that experience is that I recognize the fact that when the clouds change (in any way), the wind is gonna change. It could be a clearing line instead of a squall line. If' I'm rigged for the current conditions, the change is gonna suck. I'll head in when I see changing cloud patterns to see if I need to change kites or head home. The change could be that the wind shifts to offshore, increases or decreases. In any event, what I've got probably won't work for the new wind condition, so I head in before it hits. Watch the skies dudes and dudettes, and be careful out there!

Great post guys, just a shame it had to come at the expense of somebody. I hope all is as good for him, as good as it can be. I would like to make a note regarding wearing a helmet and the initial tuition when starting to kite. I myself like others who have posted here, wear a helmet in other sports and when I purchased my kiting gear I bought a helmet. I brought my gear to my water start lesson and when I put on the helmet the instructor laughed at me! Because of this I left it on, I even had lunch with it on! But, since then I have not used it again. I am sure the instructor has not laughed at another student for wearing a helmet and I am going to start using it again. I believe that clever people put practical before aesthetical. I kite in a great location with few hazards and I could easily convince myself that I don’t need a helmet. Last week there were over 150 kites in the sky and I only saw one person who was wearing a helmet. The next time there will be two. My common sense must be a sign of middle age setting in and self preservation coming to the fore, not a bad thing at all! (The self preservation that is)
Be safe and good winds.
WjM.

WjM, if you feel safer this way, do it. Everyone laughing at you is an idiot, especially the instructor, he should know better. For sure it is a bad instructor with no knowledge.

If thinking about wearing a helmet, first of all ignore the irresponsible sarcasms of the type:
"i bet you wear a helmet when you kite...."
quote JerseyPride
who thought this was insulting Rickl, in another recent thread.

Its always a good idea to wear a helmet.
Im glad to hear your buddy is making a full recovery.
But come on people! so many of these accidents i read about have been caused by changing winds.
You know the signs of an impending change, and if you dont maybe you should try another sport. If your still out there trying to get the last trick in before the squall hits your an idiot.
I can see some people now staying out till the last second because they have the safety of a helmet.
I dont know how many times i have seen people kiting with the storm approaching. It has been shown that lightning can reach out and touch you as far as 50 miles. The wind line can also be pushed out infront of a front line. Sometimes its hard to judge how far away a line is or how long till it gets to where you are. WHY RISK IT?
If you see it coming or know its there do yourself a favor and just get off the water. So you may loose a few hours kiting. Its not worth your life. And just because you have a helmet on dosent mean your going to survive when the shit hits the fan.
And again wishing Bro a speedy recovery.
