new board design

Postby mike456111 » Fri Oct 29, 2010 4:57 am

some advice pls.
I have been experimenting with board building with different product, but it get expensive after a will. I have this idea for composite build up pls let me know if you think it would work.

stucture would be from top going down:

- 6k carbon fiber sheet (10.6 oz)
- soric xf (core material)
- kevlar veil
- 6k carbon fiber sheet (10.6 oz)

all vaccum bagged with epoxy resin.
size 134x40cm

my question are:
will it flot?
will it be strong enuf? to stiff, to flexible?
will it be the most thin and light board ever?

ty for you help?

Mike

It would be heavy, too thin and probably too flexible to ride.
The soric stuff is only 3mm thick I think, not enough!
Plus it soaks up resin -it's more an alternative to using heavy roving or many many layers of glass, not so much an alternative to foam or wood.
For economy, why not use wood cores?
They are cheap enough and strong, don't soak up resin too much.
I just made a 137x43 wood core board, with 6oz skins and 6 oz glass reinforcement, it weighs about 3.1 kg, and that is a pretty wide board and about 14.5mm thick.
With a 135x40 typical size it would be easy to go under 3kg especially if not too thick.

3mm does sound pretty thin as a simple core material.
i would be more inclined to use it as the vendor suggests

...as a core material for sandwich skins that are vacuum infused.

i'll give them the benefit of the doubt regarding resin uptake after infusing which doesn't sound too bad (350 g/m2/mm)

but if this was really a design effort you'd need to ask about the:
-core density
-core compressive strenght
-core shear strength

see how the numbers compare with nomex honeycomb core
.... or even divinycell cores.
then go from there.
