This was a cool piece put together in Miami last week featuring some of the best Moth, Kite, and 49er racers in the world. The course is pretty standard and tests racers both up wind and down.
The fight! (caution, some "language" at the 18 second mark, start it later if you want to avoid)
Very cool videos and a great idea!
Would be interesting (for a next time) to include a windsurfer.
Would a good catamaran or trimaran be any competition, or would they not stand a chance?
Foilboarding (Carafino etc.) would also be an interesting contender.
I think that a foilboard, where the riding trim is controlled by some sort of wand like on a moth, might be the ultimate speed machine.
Very impressive how that moth kept its speed through the tacks.
A great video, cool to see the moth and the kite going head to head. When one fluffed tack means the difference between winning and losing, you know it is close racing. What interested me the most was that when Damien Leroy got the kite and board in the groove. he was able to sail faster and higher than the moth. I really enjoy doing long distances on a kite, and then be able to come back to where I started, and upwind ability is paramount for this.
