Soma Bay - Egypt - Which hotel and which kitecenter

Postby joakim76 » Mon Dec 13, 2010 9:07 am

Hi all !

I´m thinking about going to Soma Bay in april.

Does anyone have any experience from Soma ? Which hotel to stay at ? Which kitecenter to use ?

I would like a kitecenter that is close to the hotel and doesn´t have gusty wind.

Hope some of you out there has some good advice.

Regards

/J

We went to Soma Bay last June.
Staid at the The Cascades hotel. Not cheap, but the food and service are the best I've had in Egypt, by far. There's a daily, free shuttle to the 7bft kitehouse. The spot has perfect flat water close to shore, with a bit more chop further out. In front of the club, the wind is offshore to side-offshore and is side-shore towards the right side of the bay.
The club is excellent. Airconditioned inside if you want to get out of the heat for a bit, plenty of beach chairs, space, carpets for rigging, water for rinsing, showers, clean toilets, good food, friendly people, no stones or coral in the water, ...
As this part of the bay is littered with the more expensive hotels, everything tends to be expensive (European prices basically). That was for us the only drawback. From what I heard, the Breakers hotel in the same bay is pretty decent too and considerably cheaper.
On the other side of the bay, you have more hotels and another kiteclub. Haven't been there myself, but talking to people, it appears to be more crowded and coral in the water.

Some sweet advice :D

I´ve looked at the Intercontinental hotel and Surfmotion kitecenter.
This looks to be a pretty good setup.

Is the 7bft kitehouse and Surfmotion close to each other ???

if you stay directly in Soma Bay, go to the Breakers...kiter run hotel, great selection of food. A manager that cares, you will see. And not expensive, well worth its money!

The water at the 7bft is very flat, while Interconti is choppy. Interconti is also better during winter, due to higher water in the lagoon, so you have a huge shallow area.

Winds in Egypt are gustier in general

Thanks for the advice Toby !

I´ll be going in april so maybe not winter season :-? but I hope the lagoon is kiteable during this period also.

Is it on or offshore winds at 7bft kitehouse ?

I have been at the Interconti/Surfmotion spot. I lived at the Cascades but then we took a taxi every day to the other side to get onshore winds for my beginner brother.
It was okay but much to shallow. Not a freestyle practice place. And the deeper water was reserved to windsurfers unless you went further out (to the sharks :jump: )

Shit, I went to El Gouna and kited outside the laggons. I never though about the the sharks.
Well actually, two weeks ago I though about it after the events in Sharm El Sheihk.
