With a nice 15-20 from the SW and low avalanche hazard I kited up some 13,400' peaks above Deer Park. Only a 20 minute ride on a groomed trail from Silverton to the launch.

I ran into my friend John on top of one peak. He was ridgewalking for a couple of days.

It's hard to believe the magic that a kite (and sled!) brings to the backcountry - miles and miles of powder, peaks, chutes and an infinite number of places to explore.

There is a lot of cool stuff happening in kiting (water and snow) right now. Noah, Wayne, and others are just killing it. I love it. But jeeez, Glick, talk about raising the bar. Very cool. Way to show us the way! The section along that upper ridge really got my attention. Nice.

I spent some time in Silverton/TM Hut last winter and got to put my kite only once. The place has amazingly sick/rad terrain. Got to get back there.

Someone posted a very similar GPS track where scientists had tagged a wolverine, one of the gnarliest creatures on the planet.

Since the Panther rolled off the sidehill and into the creek bottom on the way up we only got a quick recon before dark.


Luckily the 30 pack of PBR's and Makers were all recoverable. The next morning under clear skies and foggy heads we enjoyed a great north wind session near the hut in Picayune Gulch.


I lost my GPS track for the day but Picayune sits just to the SE from Placer Gulch above Animas Forks.




The owners of the hut are enthusiastic newbie kiters and are very excited to get more of us up there exploring. Bookings are pretty busy with groups of gravity type sliders so reservations might be hard to get on short notice.

that hut is pretty awesome looking base camp to explore. Do you take sleds up there, is that the only way to get to it?

Checked out the treasure mt hut website, would be nice to see some coordinates of the hut or area on their website.
