Venezuela / Central america in July

Postby blizzy » Thu Feb 17, 2011 11:18 am

Hey,

I'm thinking about going to central america in July for 3-4 weeks.
What spots are good during that time? And which places are affordable enough to stay 3-4 weeks? I'm looking for a backpacker kinda place where food and accommodation is cheap, no all-inclusive spa resorts
Would be great if the spots are ok for both beginner and intermediate/advanced level.
Thanks!

I think its off season in most of Central America (Costa Rica pacific side season is more Nov-March and same for Nicaragua including Corn Islands). You may find some wind in Costa Rica but its not a sure thing (check with Nicola at Blue Dreams Hotel - he'll know).

Ecuador and Peru have wind then if you want to go a bit further south...both definitely doable backpacker style. Ocean kiting so deep water/some swell (although its off season for waves). I kited in Ecuador for a month two summers ago - you could stay in town for $15-20 or stay on the beach (about 20 mins from town but right at the kiting spot) for about $10/day. I had friends who went down to northern Peru to kite and said it was cheaper.

Hi

The eastern coast of Venezuela is known for good trades winds from Dec-May, or maybe only April. I've been there during July, and by then the ITCZ blocks out the trade winds and you get lofty NW or W winds of about 10 knots. Trades might punch through late afternoon, but can't be counted on. Definitely not reliable for kiting. I'd say stay away from Venezuela after May if you are looking for trade winds.

Regarding ECUADOR mentioned above........ Can anyone advise the best way to get from Quito to Manta with kite gear? Do the domestic flights rape you for excess/oversize baggage?

Also, do you think it better to stay in the town or down at the beach?

Thanks.
