Hookipa the day after the Tsunami!

Postby alex a » Mon Mar 21, 2011 6:26 am

Hey everyone,
We got a treat the other day when Maui County closed down Hookipa Beach Park to everyone and would not let anyone launch at the beach.
This was a result of the devastating Tsunami that hit Japan and also on Maui (but much smaller luckily).
Water was still surging in Maui for a couple days after the tsunami with minor tidal surges as I noticed the Bone Yard went dry by 1 to 2 ft or .5 m of exposed reef two days after the tsunami!!
Kiters Jammed out to the point at Hookipa while the windsurfers were trying to figure out how to get into the water. I passed by on my way to Kanaha with my daughters to kite and noticed 5 kiters and two windsurfers at the point and the gates of Hookipa park were locked up. Called Neil Pryde Maui to see if Kanaha was open for kiting. Luckily it was not! I told my girls there was a change in plans!!
Here are some of Epes Sargent Photos. If you need photos when in Maui, look up Epes at his email of sargentphotography@hawaii.rr.com
Hope you like the photos, AA
There are some more pics at http://alexaguera.com/home/waveriding-photos/ also!

Man great pictures. How does he get such good shots? Looks like he is in the water next to you.

The one that says " Lanes" is a water shot, the others are taken from the hill at hookipa with a 600mm lens. Epes Sargent got some great shots these two days. The water shot getting the kite and me at the same time is really a nice shot! I have a sequence of it. Pat Goodman, the designer of the Cabrinha kites really enjoyed that shot!

Nice! Must be cool to kite that place. That's one place where the windsurfers definately look way better than the kitesurfers I have to admit.

That is a guy named Buck who is a regular at Lanes. I think he is riding a Jimmy Lewis Custom polyester quad not a Doyle, but I will have to ask him when I see him.

Yes, you have some of the best windsurfers on the planet dialed into this place. If you watch Jason Polakow rip this place, you are extremely impressed! Supposedly, Polakow was killing it at Jaws last week, there should be some hot footage of that coming out soon.
Cameron and Flash kited Jaws on that day too so some pics of that should be on the way. Flash tacked up from Lanes on a twin tip (freakin nuts)!

Hey Alex,
thanks for sharing these great pics! I will be on Maui next week, arriving on Sunday April 4...
How do you rate the conditions at the beginning of April? Is there a good chance to get nice waves and wind together?
I have been a lot of times on Maui and at Lanes, but never in April... Would like to get your view on what I can expect...
I will bring my 5.7 naish custom and 7, 9 nomads...

See you on the water
Joerg
