When used for racing, offer longer lines always advantages, no matter what wind speed no matter what kite size?
Or only use longer lines when it's really light wind?

Longer lines will allow better power when pumpig kite. Short lines = pump up pump up STOP pump down pump down STOP. Long lines = pump up pump up pump up pump up pump up STOP pump down pump down pump down pump down pump down STOP.

it is dependent on conditions, the more turbulent the wind, the more advantage long lines offer, see graph



you cant increase lines indefinitely, because lines have friction

The wind is stronger higher up because it had less friction with the ground , so in strong winds you can shorten the lines to take some power out of the kite , the kite will be more responsive on shorter lines and less responsive on long ones

Ok, so there's only effect on the power of the kite. And not in the angle in which it pulls me upwind.

But more power means i can push more upwind? Or not?

yes of course more power means you can sail closer to the wind, unless off course you are so overpowered that wind picks you up out of the water and deposits you downwind, then of course you can't go upwind as well.

but anything up to that, more power gives you better upwind performance. upwind performance is not the same as speed tho. bigger kites dont always make you go faster, too big of a kite and you have too much friction in the air to go fast. the same thing for lines, too long lines give you too much friction.

What line lenght are most racers using then?

And is it true that in gusty wind you're better of using normal lines?
