Kiting Under the Beartooth Cloudline

Postby Noahpz » Fri Jun 10, 2011 4:07 pm

Yesterday I made the drive through Yellowstone Park and up the Beartooth Hwy. Parked at the gate above Long Lake and made the short walk to where I could launch. Kited the around the West Summit Switchbacks, in super smooth fresh powder, below the West Summit. The base is solid. W-NW wind – No Gusts! Cloud ceiling was just below the summit. Fully powered on the 13m as the afternoon progressed to evening. Around 8 p.m. weather began to storm w/ dumpage. Gravity turns back to the truck. Today is gonna be sick!!! Fresh pow awaits!!! Will the highway open today??? Wait and see….

Wow! What a fun weekend! Finally, after so much anticipation, the Beartooth Highway opened for the summer. However, summer is the last thing on my mind as I drove over the 11,000 pass last Friday. Snow banks two to three times the height of my truck dominated the drive. It's so snowy up here!

Big boosting was de rigueur for every kiter this weekend. The snow was fresh thanks for mid-day snow squalls. The winds were strong and super-steady.

The exploration was insane. With the record snowpack for mid-June I followed my dreams to kite an area SE of the highway. Usually this area melts out early and is never kiteable. This year is different. The area is 4 by 3 square miles. Its all kitable this year with lots of terrain features to discover.

The Beartooth Highway: It should be on every kiters hit list this year!

Oh, yeah, be prepared to fly your small kites. :thumb:
