Velocity Games - Future Shock!

Postby RickI » Wed May 28, 2003 7:50 pm

Martin Vari pops up and LANDS on top of the slider!!!

History has been made and kiteboarding has entered into a new day. Many have said that the Velocity Games
was the best competition that they have attended YET. People like Elliot Leboe, Mauricio Abreu, David Tyburski,
Chuck Patterson, Julie Gilbert, Jaime Harriaz, Kent Marinkovic, Fabrice Frick and many others said they came away
with that feeling. Why?

Image
Elliot Leboe fires one off!

Kiteboarding competition has entered into a new level of complexity and difficulty. ALL the riders that I spoke
with emphasized that they compete for FUN and not as a technical ordeal. Still, in future competitions the
guys that spend the most time riding and successfully experimenting with new moves may well be the winners.
Popping multiple rotations off of the kicker, an attempted double handle pass, precision launching and landing
ON TOP of the slider and lots more. The days of overnight kiteboarding wonders may have slid into the past.
Many riders seem to be moving away from off the board tricks and into demanding wakestyle moves like
handle passes, Mobius, a ton of kicker and slider tricks and other full on tricks. Then there are the sliders
and kickers or ramps. These wind park toys may well be here to stay, only BIGGER.

Something else, HELMETS AND KITE LEASHES, will likely be VERY COMMON at future competitions and
in magazines and videos. Why, well slamming into sliders, kickers or ANY hard object can hurt, A LOT. Helmets
were required for riders hitting the slider and kicker. I asked about two dozen of the WORLDS BEST RIDERS,
if the helmets got in their way, distracted them or otherwise impaired their style. As a group they said NO,
most forget they have the helmet shortly after they put it on. Impact vests were worn by many as well.

The Winners Circle ...

Helmets look hot and some of the best riders in the WORLD now use them along with kite leashes.
Kiteboarding is moving UP and ON!

Image
Anke flys of the kicker!

Many of the riders used kite leashes in the competition, however some did not. Many riders threw handle
passes and other hard moves and some dropped their bar as is inevidable. Many that had leashes
resumed competition within a minute, those without leashes generally were OUT of competition in that heat.
The event layout allowed for runaway kites to miss the spectator and staging areas as a rule. In the future
there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE that competitors without leashes won't do all that well, at least not without a kite.
Of course if you don't practice with a leash don't expect to do too well in competition. The leashes that many
riders used are not proper safety leashes for normal riding as they tether the kite and partially depower it but
not fully and in fact leave the kite still flying. So this particular version of leash is more dangerous to the rider than
conventional leashes that depower the kite. All Cabrinha team riders are now supposed to be using leashes.
Hopefully, more manufacturers will require this of their team riders as well to lead by example.

Pass the handles, with a leash, DOZENS OF TIMES!

The women riders were lit and riding FULL ON.

The demands of competition don't stop with the men
but have expanded with strong skills and incredible moves among the women competitors. Expect to see
more great things from both men and women in this sport.

As in many other sports with the appearance of leashes and helmets at competitions, on team riders, in magazines
and videos, expect to see them at your local launch. So, this is a taste for now but having shot over 3200 still
images and video interviews with a dozen of some of the top riders in world, there will be more to follow!

Safety leash or Kite Leash

Postby Buzzy » Wed May 28, 2003 8:35 pm

Hi,

nice one Ricky..

I am also riding with a leash since I have been inspired to try unhooked stuff in a competition in Los Roques...but I use a normal safty leash..

I fear the kite leash as many riders seem to be using it...this leash doesn't depower the kite, it just keeps it connected to you...

can you describe some typical scenes how the kite reacted (using this Kite leash) after the rider let the bar go...

I think we should think about a two step safty system..first step, like the pros are using, then you can pull a quickrelase to totaly depower the kite

I've seen Jaime Herraiz letting his bar go twice, the kite went down and he restarted, was pulled a little bit..but it wasn't strong wind..

but what happens..if you try an aerial handle pass, with kiteloop or something alike and let you bar go????

some experieces please..some footage.. I would like to hear some opinions of riders who are using this system?
(Martin or Jaime would be nice)

the good thing is you can restart your kite after dropping it..when O let my bar go..the lines end up tangled

cheers
Buzzy

I don't know so much. I understand where these guys are coming from to a certain degree.

On the wakeboarding side, I used to think sliders were a waste of time but once you start using them, you starting having a lot of fun. They're not everything, but they are nice to play around on 20% of the time.

The competition was definitely sick!! It was my first windsport event to go to and I really enjoyed it. The new leashes are great and I never saw anything the entire weekend where i thought those type of leashes could be dangerous. I watched sky solbach trying some handle pass stuff and when he missed the handle the kite would just depower and wait till he was ready to get back to the bar. Elliot said he uses that system from a 20m to a 10m kite with no problem. He also mentioned he wouldn't recommend that type past a 10m, i think he said thats how he hurt his ribs, don't quote me on that though. I got a chance to ride at the contest with one of them and I intentionally let go of the bar while i was ridng. I did get dragged a bit but nothing serious. The kite simply sat there and waited for me to pull it back in.

Watch out the sport has gone to a new level.

I saw several bars dropped using this new leash design, the Hamish MacDonald version that depowers the kite and some without any leash at all. The Hamish MacDonald version took some minutes to relaunch but it was possible. This design permits handle passes and protects both the rider, other competitors and bystanders against a powered up kite or a runaway kite.

Those without leashes generally watched their kite fly off downwind for the waverunners to recover.

The new leash design in light to moderate winds, as Paul described, dragged the rider a short distance until the kite parked in the sky after a short time. As the leash is attached to the back of the harness of a sliding strap, it has the potential to pull the rider BACKWARDS.

I saw one nasty bar release under well powered conditions in which the rider was dragged backwards at speed for a while until the kite stabilized and parked. This new leash system is FOR PRO RIDERS with sufficient skill to attempt to manage the downside and that accept the elevated chances for injury. Risk is nothing new to Pro riders, hopefully they have the skill, speed and luck to manage through the nasty bits most of the time. Connecting with a weak link that breaks reliably at some multiple of the rider's weight MIGHT reduce the risk in SOME cases but it is uncertain. The point is that competitive pro riders in the interest of winning will likely go to new leash designs in the interest of retaining their kite thereby keeping them in the competition. This measure will protect other riders and bystanders but does put the competitor more at risk. The risk needs to stay with the kiteboarder at any rate.

Don't like wakestyle riding, well enough. I don't think I would attempt any of it anytime soon myself. The point is that MANY of these leading riders seem to be heading in that direction for now. Next year, who knows, could be something totally different. Join in new trends or just go out and shred for the fun of it. The later idea appeals to me, got wind?

Eli, I interviewed Andre and hope to upload the video to the Internet. He made special mention of you as the guy that got him into kiteboarding. Thanks, Andre is a wonder on the water to watch and should heat up competitions all over from current indications!

ALoha
I just walked in my door, back home in Hawaii.
Texas was absolutely crazy.
The contest was the best ever...EVER..anywhere...
So everybody said.
The quality of riders, the setup, the scene, the insane parties (24/7)

Let me tell you, it was nuts.
Just check out this ladder and you know how insane this contest was.
