“Continent -Island 2011” Live GPS Kite Race
The fourth and now classic summer event “Crossing The Straits by Kite, Windsurf and Sail” is coming.
An event organised by NewKiteZone of Punta Pellaro (RC) with the valued support of Reggio Calabria Sailing Club and The Lega Navale of Reggio Calabria (Southern Section)
Starting from the heart of the city, Reggio’s beautiful Via Marina, from 3rd to 7th August 2011.



This is an extreme sport event, a challenge against the wind and sea.
Kitesurfers, windsurfers and sailors will all race together from the same start and finish point. This legendary stretch for racing is often tactically challenging, given the changing wind conditions and differing aspects of the sea, but it certainly makes for a fascinating spectacle. The Strait, with the imposing form of Etna, two coasts seeming so close and the views across the blue sea paint a perfect picture. The excitement of the event and the ease of which the race can be judged (the winner is simply the first back after touching Messina) instantly magnetises the public, even those who may be strangers to the sport. They are also attracted by the spectacular acrobatics of the “kiters” who are involved every day in training and exhibition events and speed trials over the water.
But the great innovation for this year’s Continent-Island event is the introduction of the GPS Android system that will accompany the athletes during the regatta. Thanks to this technology, for the first time in an event of this kind, the audience will be able to follow the movements of the competitors live over the course, on the surf-village screens. They will be able to watch all the stages of the race including position changes, individual performances, overtaking and loss of ground. Thanks to virtual coverage, through television or internet, even the audience at home can watch every detail of this summer’s challenge and, as always, there’s live betting: The Kite winners, the Windsurfers, the race odds, will the records be broken?....it’s all wide open!

In the words of the President of the Association of NewKiteZone and organiser of the “Crossing”, Agostino Martino: “ It’s a unique formula and experience that every Italian kiter dreams of, with each event bringing more excitement every time it’s held. This is because every year the challenge is new and almost makes it seem entirely different. However the scenery, unquestionably unique to the Straits, is always the same and always marvellous, retaining the essence of it all. From the point of view of the innovations, especially those of the GPS and improved safety, this year will certainly be more spectacular but I can imagine nothing more wonderful, in terms of emotion, than the huge numbers that will start the race. It will be one of the greatest and most intense experiences of their lives.” He adds, “this is also the first year that the event raises the technical level by limiting to 36 the number of competitors for the blue ribbon RACE and devoting a soft edition RIDE open to everyone. It will therefore be a great celebration, not only for the participants but also for the audience who will feel completely involved in the live, on-screen race.”
This action sport with its acrobatics and the colours of the kites in flight across the water has significant appeal from the point of view of tourism. So much so that it is estimated, from data gathered over the recent events, that 92% of the audience will be casual visitors curious about this novel competition. Statistically every day there are around 50000 people who walk along the promenade, Lungomare, during the weekend of the event.

The initial goal of the organising committee seems to have been be achieved: create a regular annual event, a classica of Calabrian sport that promotes “a real festival of the sea” for all the sports linked to it (kite, windsurf and sailing) and which offers fun and entertainment for visitors throughout the day. Its success can be measured by the fact that it has now grown to become nationally and internationally renowned.
The ethical and social intent to merge the two shores of Reggio and Messina, envisaged by “Città Metropolitana”, takes shape in this fourth edition because the Continent-Island is an athletic competition that does not lose sight of its social function. In fact unity and sharing are the watchwords in the overall vision. The athletes who race across the course will witness the sporting character of brotherhood among the various disciplines, sharing the same love of the sea, the wind and good healthy fun.

While the competitors concentrate on training hard, the audience who previously had to carry round the weight of telescopes can now, for the first time, follow the whole course of the race on the big screen of the media tower. They too will be able to enjoy the final sprint live as well as the thousands who traditionally view it from the Arena Lido of Reggio Calabria, a modern amphitheatre on the beach! REGGIO CALABRIA 1 LUGLIO 2011 - Traversata dello Stretto in Kite 4^ Edizione: per la prima volta la sfida estrema è seguita in tempo reale grazie agli smartphone Android.



“Continent-Island 2011” RealTime GPS Kite Race
Arriva la IV Edizione dell’oramai classica estiva “Traversata dello Stretto in Kitesurf, windsurf e vela”.
Un evento organizzato dall’associazione NewKiteZone di Punta Pellaro (RC), col prezioso supporto del Circolo Velico di Reggio Calabria, e della Lega Navale (delegaz. Reggio Calabria Sud).
Partenza dal cuore della città, la splendida Via Marina di Reggio Calabria dal 3 al 7 Agosto 2011.

Si tratta di un evento estremo, una sfida contro vento e mare. Partono così assieme, kitesurf e windsurf e velisti, correndo via dal punto di partenza che sarà poi l’arrivo. Un campo di regata leggendario e tatticamente probabilmente non semplice da interpretare, viste le condizioni di vento e mare eterogenee, ma sicuramente dotato del grande fascino. Lo Stretto, l’imponente sagoma dell’Etna, le due coste così apparentemente vicine, i suoi scorci, in un mare blu: il soggetto perfetto di un dipinto.
La manifestazione risulta molto “frizzante” e la facile lettura della gara (vince semplicemente chi torna per primo, dopo aver toccato Messina) magnetizza istantaneamente anche un pubblico estraneo allo sport, attirato anche dalle spettacolari evoluzioni acrobatiche dei kiters coinvolti ogni giorno dall’evento in allenamenti ed esibizioni e dalle velocità delle tavole sull’acqua.
Ma la novità della Continent-Island di quest’anno è l’introduzione dei sistemi GPS Android che accompagneranno gli atleti durante la traversata. Grazie a questa tecnologia, per la prima volta in assoluto in eventi simili, il pubblico presente potrà seguire sugli schermi del surfvillage gli spostamenti delle “pedine” sulla mappa dello stretto, le singole velocità istantanee e posizioni e dunque godere anche delle fasi della gara lontane dalla costa. Sorpassi, rallentamenti, sprint e colpi di scena: sarà grazie alla virtualizzazione 3D della gara che il pubblico da casa, attraverso la TV e via Internet potrà seguire ogni dettaglio della rinnovata sfida estiva usando una format innovativo e coinvolgente destinanto sicuramente a diffondersi largamente.
Dal lato sportivo le scommesse sono sempre vive: “Vincerà un kite o un windsurf? si abbasserà il record?”; i pronostici sono apertissimi a quanto pare.

Ne parla così il Presidente dell’Associazione NewKiteZone ed organizzatore della traversata Agostino Martino: "Una formula unica ed una esperienza che ogni kiter d'Italia sogna di poter vivere nell'esclusiva eccezionalità di ogni edizione. E sì, perchè ogni anno la sfida è diversa; sembra quasi tutta un'altra. Eppure lo scenario, indiscutibilmente unico dello Stretto, è sempre lo stesso e meraviglioso. Integro nella sua essenza. Dal punto di vista delle novità, specialmente quella del GPS, quest'anno di certo sarà tutto ancora più spettacolare, aggiungendo sicurezza tra l'altro, ma posso immaginare, che nulla in più darà in termini di emozioni, già gigantesche a chi prenderà il via alla gara. Sarà una delle esperienze più grandi ed intense della sua vita..." ed aggiunge “E’ tra l’altro il primo anno che l’edizione alza il livello tecnico limitando a 36 atleti per la gara RACE e destinando una edizione soft, la RIDE, aperta a tutti. Sarà dunque una grande festa, bella da vivere non solo per i partecipanti ma anche per gli accompagnatori ed il pubblico coinvolto dalla gara sugli schermi e dal vivo.”

Uno sport d’azione così acrobatico, i colori degli aquiloni ed il loro volo in aria, sul mare, costituiscono infatti un richiamo significativo, dal punto di vista turistico, tanto che si stima, sulla base dei dati raccolti nelle scorse edizioni, il 92% delle presenze sarà di visitatori casuali incuriositi dalla novità e dall’evento (statisticamente ogni giorno sono quasi 50000 i passaggi sul lungomare nei giorni di weekend della manifestazione).

L’obiettivo del comitato organizzatore sembra essere centrato: realizzare un appuntamento annuale, cresciuto fino a diventare oggi di portata nazionale ed internazionale, una classica dello sport calabrese destinata a promuovere un appuntamento che è una vera e propria Festa del Mare e degli sport ad esso legati (kite e windsurf e vela) in acqua, offrendo intrattenimento ed animazione per i visitatori per tutta la giornata.
L’Intento etico-sociale di unire le due sponde di Reggio e Messina nell’ottica dei concetti
della Città Metropolitana, prende forma in questa 4°edizione, poiché la Continent-Island si riconferma una gara atletica che però non perde di vista la dimensione sociale. Infatti l’unione e la condivisione sono le parole d’ordine nello scenario complessivo. Gli atleti correranno assieme la traversata a testimonianza del carattere di fratellanza sportiva tra le diverse specialità e di condivisione dello stesso amore per il mare, il vento ed il sano divertimento.

Agli atleti non resta che allenarsi bene mentre lo spettatore, abitualmente munito di cannocchiali, potrà alleggerire la sua passeggiata in centro senza questi ultimi, potendo, per la prima volta nella storia, seguire tutto l’andamento della gara dagli schermi dei media totem dell’evento o godendo la partenza e lo sprint finale dell’arrivo dal vivo, come tradizionalmente ogni anno fanno in migliaia, comodamente dalla prospettiva di “primafila” dell’Arena Lido di Reggio Calabria (la stessa location usata per MissItalia Nel Mondo 2011), un moderno anfiteatro sulla spiaggia vista mare!!! Le emozioni sono garantite.
