saami - thats a great post.
I was thinking of renting a car when I'm there. Is there a road going to the kitecuda spot? Should I get a 4x4? Or is it more or less easy to get to by foot? It looks like a I can rent a car for 20-30 dollars a day. For a three- four day trip that seems to make more sense than paying 70 dollars for a taxi there each way?
So theres plenty of shacks with running water available? Is that within decent proximity to the kitecuda spot or is it miles away?

Greetings from Sunny Sri Lanka. Its actually paradise and it will surely be on the map soon. I run www.kitesurfingsrilanka.com and also ride for www.faith-kiteboarding.com. I am in a position to help any kite travellers with tips, accomodation, brand new gear. To answer, yes Kalpitiya is the best place to visit this time of year. May - Sept. The rest of the year I kite on the South of Sri Lanka though the winds are not consistent. Feel free to drop me a mail if you need local info. DilsiriW@gmail.com. Visit www.kitesurfingsrilanka.com as well. Cheers, Dil

CT, when exactly were you planning on going? The wind died down in Kalpitiya earlier this week and it's not really looking promising again until next week.
Yes, I figure you could find your way with a car. If you are comfortable driving in India then Sri Lanka will not be a problem for you. There are not really any roadsigns up there but you could stop regularly and ask for directions, or use a GPS receiver. The main roads are OK with a regular car, but expect a bumpy ride at times. Some of the side-roads have areas with deep sand where you could get stuck without 4WD but it's not a big issue, just keep your eyes on the road and backtrack and look for a different road if it looks like the sand is getting deep.
I assume you could manage to find a shack or room in almost any village if you take your time to ask around, but it might take a bit of time and effort of course.

I'm fairly flexible. I'm flying out of Bombay so its a piece of cake to fly to Columbo. The wind forecast on Windguru looks promising the next few days. Should I trust that forecast or is it overly optimistic?
What size kites are most people using? I'm an 85 kilo guy - I got a 12 meter and an 8 meter. With the wind slated to be 20 knots for early next week I'm a bit excited about the prospect of getting out on the 8 meter? Or is that wishful thinking?

The windguru forecasts for the area, as far as I understand, are based on satellite readings for nearby ocean quadrants. It is not very reliable, no. There is no actual weather station in Kalpitiya.
The wind today was weak. You would have struggled to stay upwind on your 12m. Sooner or later there will be better wind, of course.
On good days, common sizes are 9m to 11m depending on weight. Bring your 8m but don't count on being able to use it.

Already back.
I stayed at the kitekuda camp and had a great time. I highly recommend it.
