This year is the year of the light wind kites, the choice is now much bigger , the new kites are just not like the big kites of old which turned off just about everyone, and because of them old heavy slow down wind, short wind range, monster kites that required an electric pump, most of us gave up light wind kiteing, the speed 3 15mtr which is still the best boosting/hang time kite out there has real serious competition, I have owned or tried most of them, along with the speed 3 dlx, honestly the choice is not as narrow as it was 6months back,
well happy light wind kiter Colin,
and there is one of them that is a better all round option than the speed 3 15mtr dlx, try them, they are good, some are very very good,
party pooper colin.

You may have missed the rest of the thread title colin - it's "The Ultimate Flying Machine" and not, as you're suggesting "The Ultimate Light Wind Machine" ... unless you're so blessed to consider 20 knots as light wind :o

To me the speed 3 12DE is way more fun than the 15DE. IMO Gunnar would have been going much higher with the 12. I owned both for me the 15 didn't produce more than 1 knot more low end than the 12 and the 12 doesn't backstall and can be worked in lulls. I could hold down the 15DE up to 25 knots but the 12 is much more dynamic comfortable and fun in 20+. The 12 redirects much better and flies more like a normal kite. Did I mention the 12 jumps higher :D
Still both kites have unmatched hang time and are so easy to get big air.

as a snowkiter i d prefer the 12 than my 15 dlx, i can edge easely on snow, thx to the snowboard and going upwind easely while working a kite ( used PL kites a bunch of time and those kites are sinned all the time....my shoulders can't hold working kites anymore), i don t have flat areas, all slopes and the 12 would be more nimble for looping up the hills....
on water, i prefer a parked kite, but past 12 knots, i guess i d use a 12 instead of my 15, more nimble if i want to go straight downwind.
the 15 saved me many days where i d have stayed on the beach if i had the 12.....

otherwise, my 15 is parked fast and still have a good high range and it is still my usual kite for 80% of my rides, snow or water.....i d be slightly/huge underpowered with a 12 or i should call God for a higher wind speed..... :)

... if I get a 21, would a 15 or a 12 be a better kite for when the wind picks up? I got a P4 15 a.t.m. too ...

Has anyone tried the HQ Matrixx 15 that just arrived?

http://www.powerkitesdirect.com/hq-matrix/

I have only tried the 9 at 20 knots and it was a solid kite. And haven't tried Flysurfer yet to compare. Major differences?

I have the 21m and 12m deluxe and this combo is perfect. I ride with the 21m from 8-15 knots and the 12m from 16-28 knots. Love both kite. Above this I am on a 9m LEI.
