Carbon Fiber Routing?

Postby pranaboard » Fri Jul 15, 2011 1:33 pm

Hi Everybody,
What kind of bit do you recommend for routing edges? My project board is 11 oz. CF lay up with epoxy poured edge. I just want to avoid sanding as much as possible. Thanks for any suggestions.

i'd sugest using a router table. A router can shape just about anything (i've used one to mill aluminum) but for tougher materials it is dangerous to try to free hand(excess resistance leads to loss of control)

Roundover bit I guess, if you can get one with a small enough radius.
I don't do it that way though, 'cause my rails taper and are not rounded as much at the tips.
Personally, I cut flash off with a utility razor knife, shape the rails with an orbital sander and 40 grit on a soft sanding block, then smooth out with 60, 80, 120 grit, then wipe down with epoxy thinned with isopropyl alcohol to give a hard shiny finish ;)
Otherwise a roundover bit would be the call.
Either way use a strong dust collection system and/or a good mask.

I have just used epoxy, it's easier for me and cheaper than sourcing another material, also saves time. I don't ride up on gravel or sliders so epoxy seems durable enough, and easy to fix.
I would like to try that urethane stuff some day, but not a priority for me now.
Good winds to you. :hut:
