Why seperate inflate & deflate valves?

Just got a Slingshot Turbine & been using Cabrinha until now. My Cabrinha kites have just one valve to inflate & deflate the kite. I can't see why the Slingshot has two separate valves - one to inflate & one to deflate. Can anyone help me out? Thank you,

Are they nipple valves or big ones similar to the Sprint, Max Flow etc systems?
IIRC the nipple ones have a ball in the intake so you can remove the pump without air all pouring out but no ball in the deflate so it never gets blocked when you're trying to pack up, rolling the kite around ...

I'll have to check more closely, but if there is a ball it failed yesterday as I pumped it up for the first time and when I pulled the pump out of the valve air came out until I was able to get it closed. A failure perhaps?

I "think", that there are two valves in order to be able to deflate the kite faster.

And by naming one "inflate" and the other "deflate" - it will be easier for the user, as "no choices" is the most simple

Maybe some has slightly different sizes, so one can use different pump nozzles - would be great.


I once tried a one-way inflate valve.

And that was IMO useless, as when you reach a high pressure level, it will require a huge extra load/pressure, to be able to pump air inside (open the valve) - which is really really bad, and you will end up with a kite with "almost" sufficient air only

So one-way valves has been tried by some, but I think they have dissapeared again because of above

I dont know, as it might be very kite specifific - just a general thought

Hi Peter - the Rebel has a one way valve now.

The first time I used it I thought it was stupid, just a whole lot of extra pressure to pump against, a proper workout.

However I soon discoved that the key was not to insert the nozzle as far into the valve. If you do this, there is no discernible additional pressure and the feature is mildly useful, albeit not necessary.

Personally I'm a big fan of the simpler the better, which is why I still HATE one pump......

Problem with this is that but ramming the pump nozzle right into the valve you stretch the valve and it will eventually leak

Hi JGTR - sorry, what i was saying was that the key is NOT to insert the pump nozzle as far as normal, thats when everything flows normally. Apologies if I wasn't clear.....

Anyone else care to shed some light as to the purpose of two separate valves - one for inflate and one for deflate? I would think some of the folks on here who own shops, work for kite companies, or teach would have an idea. Thanks for your help!

deflate valve is bigger inflate is smaller.
at high pressure it would be more difficult to pump against a wider nozzle that's why the inflate has a smaller diameter.
You want to deflate fast, that's why deflate is bigger.

In the case that the inflate is a one way valve then the reasons are obviouse...
