Tug Hill Snow Kite Rally 2012: Come one Come All

Postby E-Rock » Mon Dec 05, 2011 2:58 pm

Announcing the 2012 Tug Hill Snow Kite Rally MLK Weekend, Jan 14th to the 16th

This will be our 5th year hosting kiters from all over the country to come explore what is called the Skyline of the east. Getting over 300 inches of snow on average per year and home to the Maple Ridge Wind Farm, the largest wind farm east of the Mississippi. This is some of the best and consistent snowkiting that can be had in the Northeast proving it isn't necessary to go West to enjoy epic snow kiting. Over the past 5 years hundreds of kiters have come to our festival and it keeps growing.

This year is poised to be the biggest year yet! We will have more sites open than ever with literally 100's of acres of open terrain to explore. We have Jelly Fish Boards, Epic Kites, and Ozone signed on bringing demo's, team riders and giveaways and other companies soon to be announced. Lesson's will be available as well as free into clinics with trainer kites. Besides three days of endless terrain and demo's we will also host a post session party Saturday night complete with pictures and footage from the days riding, a raffle with swag donated by our sponsors, and most importantly a chance to meet fellow kiters and party the night away! This is going to be a great event for both new kiters and seasoned wind addicts a like. There is also plenty of other winter activities to do from snowboarding and cross country skiing to snowmobiling and much more so bring the family and the none kiters along to experience this great location.

For more information on the event, where to stay, etc check out,

Lastly if Lewis County NY doesn't seem like a snowkiting destination check out this video from last years rally!

Hope to see a lot of you there and if you have any questions on the event feel free to ask

I may just come for an entire week! I'm looking forward to getting to ride some terrain. I'm used to frozen water and a small field next to Lake Erie.

If i want to go out on ice for a change that week, anyone know how well Oneida lake freezes over? Looks like a great place for some speed on ice.

Saul

Hay Saul- Oneida Lake normally sets up perfect, up to 2ft of ice with snow surface - if the trend in weather has NW wind the lake will be re surfaced daily with lake effect snow , I have done downwind tours of from end to end (20mi) in strong westerly in knee deep pow . The place where most kiters gather is on the far east end at Sylvin Beach . With the regular westerlys this is a good spot to ride.

Winter is about 6 -8 weeks behind right now , tug hill has had a few dustings, and the sustained below freezing temps required for the lakes to set up has not developed , last year this time we 60 in of snow had fallen , today its brown..... The good news is - we been riding waves on Lake Ontario in mild temps up till about a week ago..... have no fear Tug Hill can be buried under 6ft of snow in a few hours with the right conditions

If ya wana see what it looks like at Sylvin beach you can use this web cam-
