Winter starts tomorrow ; Any cool boards in the works ?

Postby Bille » Wed Dec 21, 2011 4:07 pm

Winter starts tomorrow in the USA ; Any COOL boards in the works ?

I'm building a copy of a 135 with quad concave bottom ; stole a,(PFP) mold off
the bottom of a buddy's board while he was at work ! Smallest board I'll
have ever ridden ; but was told :"it's time" !!

This one I'll make with 7/16 inch thick, (1/8" cell) NOMEX HONEYCOMB, in the
center and 1/8 inch thick on both tips. Was told this original board was
stiff as hell, so thinning up the core should give some Flex.
Will try a different lay-up on this one, lots of 50K Carbon Tow running length-wise
on the convex peaks of the bottom, but no carbon weave in the skins ; i want to
see-through the board so i'll lightly color-tint the Epoxy and use S-glass on all
the concave-s.

I want it to flex a Little in the length, but a Lot in the Twist ; so the Carbon tow
will take care of the length-wise flex and the S-glass will be laid-up (+ - 90).
Each of the carbon spars will be wrapped with 5.5oz carbon weave,(+ - 45)
to turn them into a spar of sort, and reduce the likely-hood of a De-lam in the skins.

The HONEYCOMB is only 1.5-zo/cubic foot, & ya can drive a car over it once a
skin is applied !! Suppose to be water-proof as well, but we'll see.
Never tried this lay-up before so i'll let Ya know how it goes ...

What You Guys got going ??

thanks Bille

I planked it all in 2" think boards first , then I let it sit in the shop on the heated floor with a fan blowing on it for 3 week first. Cedar you can pretty much use right away after cutting it. ( very dry growning tree) Basswood on the other hand is wet wet wet. after 3 weeks with air blowing on it it was good to go... Haveing 3 weeks off at christmas I hopefully will have both of them close to being done.

I couldn't afford to buy 2 SUP for myself and the wife at 1800 bucks a pop. So I figured I'll build to full on custom wooden ones for under 1000 bucks together. ( would be alot more if I had to buy the wood also.)

You can buy a complete kit from www.woodsurfboardsupply.com for $1000 or so that is everything you need to make one from the ribs to the glass to finish it. Just tell them Terrie from Jellyfish sent you if ever want to order a kit. Or you can buy just the frame work for a couple of hundred.

Will keep you posted on the progess

Terrie, that looks pretty cool. Any reason you went with bass? Or is it what you just cut down?

For hollow boards, I've seen a website where they talked about software for building ribs for the boards. I think this is the link where I found it, in the 2nd paragraph, but I've never used it.

Looking forward to seeing the results of both the wood and the honeycomb board!

Peter thanks for the link. Might have to do my own ribs down the road.. I found the prices on woodsurfboardsupply.com not really that bad if you figure out the wood and the time to lay it out and theirs is all CNC so it is perfect lay out . a friend of mine up in Barrie cuts all his out by hand though.

Bille I went and picked up my secert weapon yesterday... I like blue berry EGOs please.

Ok Billie here is one of the boards we just finished... Just wanted to show you a sneak peek of what I have up my sleeve.... LOL

it is a 151 Kite Snowboard with reverse chamber and low side cut. Top sheet is Makor from Afirca and I think it really pops with the gloss finish on it.. Never seen wood like this before around here..

What do you have for a sneek peek?

SUP will be done hopefully by feb , but have a couple of snow events to go to in the next couple of weeks..

I Hate Loosing, but i got the --- "Need to Concede" !!
got side-tracked on Two projects this winter :

** One is a Hobie 21SE that i'm a month away from finishing. I cut the back off
an 18ft Hobie Hull and glassed in a stern for a 15Hp 4-stk outboard engine. the
now 16ft modded Hull goes in the center of the 21 Hulls, and a swiveling captains
chair with foot controls to the rudders, goes where the mast use to be.
The tramp is gone and replaced with a Hard Deck & fish net spanning the aria
between the Hulls in front of the forward cross-beem.
Up wind with the engine & Down-winders with a 19M PL kite. Should be Great
for camping !!

** My old 2008,13m Edge ; well with it's New Mylar TE and pre-shaped
& molded carbon struts, i'm thinking
the new,(used) 2010 Edge isn't gonna see much use this year.

SO there --Terrie-- where do i Pay-Pal the money , for the BEER (IOU)
for not finishing my Honeycomb & carbon board ??

first up.

3 mini longboards for my kids. bamboo core triaxle glass. Thats going to take me through to june ish. The artwork will be hard. so far i have to make a strawberry shortcake board and a dinosour skeleton shark board...?

Then its into a new high speed landboard. bamboo core carbon reinforecement with carbon trucks intergrated into the deck. going to use 12" pocket bike wheels

then we will get into the some TT's.

I plan a lightish wind TT 140x45 ish using 2.6mm bamboo ply and triaxle for this. one layer out at the tips merging to 3 layers at the center so 8mm or so think in the center.

Then its going to be a wave TT or maybe even a mutant. haven't thought too hard about that one yet.

Then i'll be into the longboard skateboard build. lowered wheel arches intergrated trucks.... again using bamboo and carbon.

i'm going to ve busy.
