I know how it is…everyone is tired of Bighorns this and Bighorns that. I didn’t even want to make another Bighorns post anyways. I’m only doing it because it’s so amazing I have no control. We hit up an entirely different side of the Mountain this time so the pics are fresh… I hope that helps… Ultimately you’ll just have to live with it, and besides the snow is coming and soon we all will be able to go out our back doors. Anyway, it all started because of the forecast and Chaz’s internal fire.
The clearing skies and trailing SW winds forecast following this last storm was such a good bet we had to go. Last week I saw the set up so I gave a heads up to the local Jackson crew and Charles Symons was the only taker. He said he’d pull some strings. Being the last of us to get on the snow this season he had some internal fire brewing.
Chaz picked me up at 3pm just as I strategically slipped away from work. We headed over to Wayne’s storage spot and squeezed Chaz and my sleds onto Wayne’s single trailer. Chaz just got a new sled and I wanted to get mine rolling too. Since Wayne’s in Thailand we figured it’d be ok (Dear Wayne, I hope it’s ok we borrowed your trailer). Unfortunately in Greybull, Wyoming the police realized we had no trailer lights (Chaz’s dog chewed the cord) but we were fortunate enough to only get the speeding ticket.
8 hours later due to bad roads, being pulled over, and accidentally going towards Ten Sleep for the 3rd time we pulled into the Bear Lodge. I’m almost a regular there now, still nothing like old Noah. They practically have a warm towel waiting for him when he arrives. We piled in our room and went straight to sleep. It was a long night because all I could think about was the powder, wind and Mountains. I even tried to count sheep at one point.
The next morning we ate some greasy spoon at the Bear Lodge and headed out. Kiters on the horizon, and after an 8 hour drive and a long night, there’s nothing like pulling up to a spot seeing kites in the air!
These pictures are from the SW facing bowl just over the top of Mt. Baldy. I’ve been there a couple times, but this is the first time it was loaded up with snow and we gave it a full effort session. Hope you like the pics!
Cheers, Will Taggart

Beautiful! What a sweet day you two had there on Baldy. Yes the Big Horns are magic and for all of us who are under the spell of that magic, I know it has rubbed off and infected many other kiters.
Thanks for posting and see ya out there.

What happens if you get that much air, then drift downwind into the wind shadow of the mountain, while still in the air?

You are normally gliding into the wind pretty fast. If you start going backwards you just let the bar out and you will descend and speed up. There is a ton of speed range with kites. You can fly through rotor and turbulence no problem! Be careful!
