Hi all. I'll be in Sharm el Sheikh in the end of March and beginning of April. Can anyone give me info on kite sizes to bring. I'm 185 pounds and at board start. Also, any reviews on Kitejunkies and the Jaz Mirabel Hotel. Thanks for all replies. Brian

I've not been to sharm, but have been to hurghada in September. That place had no wind, light wind, strong wind, and really strong wind in the course of the two weeks that I was there. I brought a 12, 8, and a 5.5 and used all of them. I'm 85 kilos.

This time of year you should be good with one big and one small. I don't think you will need really small. You will probably get some really light/no wind days. In my opinion its probably not worth kiting on those days. You should probably just go diving or get hammered and chase around russian girls. I sat on the beach for a whole week waiting for the wind to pick up when it just wasn't going to.

I've recently been in Soma Bay (south of Hurghada), from Jan. 1 to Jan. 8, kiting at 7bf Kite Station. I carried with me a 17, an 11 and a 7. I used all the three sizes :-))))). I frankly think that in march/april the wind should be steadier and stronger (this is the rule, normally, the hotter the climate the stronger the wind), maybe you'll want to carry with you something around 11 or 12 and something smaller, let's say a 7 or so.

I kited in Sharm 3 years ago in December and I went to Kitejunkies. I was early in the learning process and they were very helpful. I nice couple from Europe runs the opp. The location is very good with a large protected lagoon and mostly waist deep water. They have kite candies on the beach to help with launching/landing and compressed air. I'm not familiar with the other place you mentioned. It blows there so don't leave the small kite at home. Kitejunkies has gear to rent so if you are without a certain size kite it shouldn't be a problem.

I'd take as many as you can, I went there in June and used 8, 10 and 12 (12 my biggest). Started off strong early in the morning and dropped off. I kited early morning when wind was stronger, most people kiting during the day were on 14-17m so I'd defo say take a big kite.

I'm live close to Sharm. Most useful size is from 8m to 12m.

I've done Sharm many times now at different times of the year. Thermal winds tend to have a little less mass but the best bet in my experience is to take a 3 kite quiver if you can. I'm 76kg, ride 134 board, intermediate level and take 15, 10 and 7. The 15 gets the most use by far! The 7 I've only used once in 5 trips but you never know! Drop the small kite if you can only take 2.
The KJ guys have plenty of hire kites including ozone zephyrs which get plenty of use.

I was there in Feb a few years ago - was just getting going on the board and didnt bring my own gear. I hired from KJ - Kevin and Diane were very helpful, a wide range of kit and gave good advice and tips on how to get better. Just charged for the rental. Nice spot as previously described - v safe and waist high water. Used from a 16m down to a 9m (I'm 245lbs / 112kgs).

Have fun.
