Thought id share this Last Weds night was kiting in very small onshore swell when caught a small wave close in to shore but as hit the top lost my footing and the board flipped over and i came crashing down on top of the fins(quad) with the back of my leg. 1 fin on the rear which went right in and did the main dmagae snapped clean off never to be seen again, the outside fin next to it got snapped almost in half and caused the scratch across the leg I'm guessing. I managed to miss all the main nerves, blood vessels, arteries, tendons and not go lower and through the back of the knee so i count myself as super super lucky despite the pain. When it happened saw a massive spurt of blood and though oh my god ive hit a main one and this is it I've now got 2 weeks to sort my leg out as going to Florida from UK with kids to do all the parks and stuff and then I'm desperate to get back in the water as I'm normally in at least twice a week. Anyone else had a good finning out there ? Ben

Ouch! So was this mainly caused by the broken off fin being sharp or are fins usually sharp enough to do this?

Bille My best buddy growing up who has two prosthetic legs would always give new substitute teachers the "a-student-on-verge-of-breakdown-act" while stabbing his legs in class (they didn't know about the legs). Incredible funny. Well I guess now I feel for the poor teachers, had them all in tears and one even looked like she fainted. to OP: Heal up fast. I have scars and stuff from fins, but noting like that. Just minor dings.

be happy it wasn't a race board you were on...otherwise the leg would be off!
but, better the leg than the head, no?
Wishing you a fast healing!

Wow - nothing that bad for me, but more than a decade ago at one of our remote thermal wind sites on Vancouver Island, a windsurfer wiped out and cut his femoral artery ( in his thigh ) on his sharp slalom fin, kind of like those on kite race boards now. Even though he was assisted by friends sailing with him, he bled out before they could get him to shore.
So Toby's right, stay clear of raceboard fins ( and busted surfboard fins ) !

Nasty i normally sand them down, when they grow some teeth and sharp edges. Another solution would be to get your self a board with some nice channels and loose the fins. (don't mind the fins)

Cheers for replies guys For info it was future fins. Dont think it really matters what brand of board, fin, kite etc with accidents i always feel it comes with the territory injuries and extreme sports. You have to prepared to take them now and again and try all you can to minimise the risk. Just come back from hopsital check, apparently i lacerated the vastus lateralis which aint bad going as fin went in the back and thats more round the front of the leg and severe brusing of t everything especially the nerves which is why the bottom of my leg feels like someone elses. I count my self lucky really could have been far worse if it was inches up down or sidewards. Now to recover so can hit the water soon via a nice relaxing holiday to errrr Disney world and universal for 2weeks via a nice long haul flight from UK . Also Really gutted as managed to get some decent height on a couple of strapless airs at the start of the session and now need to go backwards to go forwards Ben

Did you use your leash as a tourniquet, to stop the bleeding?
