Snowkiting from Durango, CO early February?

Postby CaptainArgh » Tue Jan 10, 2012 4:01 pm

I'll be in Durango from 2/4 through 2/8 before heading down to Silverton for the weekend. So, just when you all are getting back from the Skyline (my loss for not checking that date when I booked my trip!) I'll be heading in to town looking for some folks to snowkite with!

TommyGun has given me some info on the area and I'll try to be as flexible as possible so I can head to Creede or Lemon based on the forecast, but I'll certainly need some local knowledge to play it safe and find the goods.

If you think I should set up somewhere other than Durango please let me know. I figured that was a good locale as if there is no wind I can go to the resort and snowboard, and could otherwise just go find a field somewhere. Don't want to kite alone in those big mountains, though, so I'm open to any tips, leads or advise. Hopefully some of you stay home from the Utah rally to play close to home. :thumb:

Look forward to connecting with some of you on the hill. Thanks in advance for any advise,

-todd

The Durango spots will all be looking good by the time you arrive. We have been getting some good storms in January and more snow in the forecast. The popular spots near Durango that you will be able to find kiters at when there is wind is Lemon Reservoir and Lizard Head Pass. Both are very open and have few hazards. The other locations are more remote and harder to get to unless you want to skin in or snowshoe. You will also make it just in time for the Snowdown Festival in Durango so if you like some crazy fairytale costumes and bar festivities it will surely be a memorable experience!

Sweet! Thanks for the update. Will have a full quiver of kites and some snow shoes so I'm ready for whatever that'll get me.

What sites do you guys use to forecast wind out there? Be nice to decide the night before if I'm headed up to Purgatory, or driving for a snowkite shot (preferred).

Look forward to seeing you on the snow....and I am a big fan of any festivals that involve bars.
