I'm making my own line mount for a Go Pro.

How high up the lines do you put the camera?

Why? Camrig (http://camrig.com) makes one for $45 or so. I'm sure $45 is worth the aggravation of building one and possibly having it not work properly and lose a camera or worse.

I've had both the Contour and GoPro versions and not had any issues. I prefer the Contour one.

Because it was easy and simple, and its going to be very secure. I just used some old windsurfing sail battens, carved them a bit, drilled holes, and bolted them to the base plate that came with the camera packaging. I just painted the parts with some rubber coating. I'll post pictures when its dry.

This is what the line mount is missing a simple "line clamp" allowing you to adjust where the cam is on the lines

You mean the commercially available ones don't have that?

All it really needs to hold it in place is static friction. I just painted it with a rubber coating to protect the line from wear and provide that friction.

ChickenTikka: I can post pictures in just a couple hours once the rubber coating hardens.

Can anyone answer the question? How far up the lines do you put the camera?

I've been using the line mount and the board mount form camrig for close to a year now.
You will get good results if you put the camera on the front lines just above where they come together. I have been tethering it to the ring so it doesn't slide up the lines and using plastic zip ties to secure the legs to the lines, but not so tight the safety line won't slide (4-line sle).
The ears on the waterproof gopro case are a weak point and will shear off in a big impact so you need another tether if you are going to abuse it, or you will lose it.
At this point you get a good pov of the rider and a bit of the surrounding environment,
so its worth the effort on a good day for sure!

The board mount which attaches to the fins on your board is another story-

This mount takes those ears totally out of the equation and can take a severe beating over and over again. Its the only mount I trust 100%.
I did a mod on this mount and put it on a strut.
The angle is perfect for pointing right at the rider and after 3 sessions I'm feeling pretty stoked with it. You really get a sense of the surrounding at this pov.

have fun you guys and post it man!

Here is what I have.

If I really need it closer, right by the spot where the lines meet, I can get rid of the cross bars and connect the vertical rods directly to the base plate. If the base plate turns out to be too weak, I'm thinking of using the Surf Hero plate instead.

Hi SaulOhio

The best distance (for most likings) would IMO be about 3-5 meters up the lines from the bar.

Max 10 meter if you want a VERY wide shot which is not nearly as detailed and lacks the sense of speed more - but can be fine if you want the "surroundings" too.

At the kite you need another type of cam with a bit of optical zoom instead of wide angle, so up there it wont work

But try 3-5 meter from the bar, depending on your personal preference of your shooting :thumb:

:D Peter

PS: Some mention to mount it a the "Y" of the lines.
This will often work - but remember, som kitebrands has the Y down at the adjuster less than 1 meter away, others got the Y almost halfway up the lines, more than 10 meters away - very different :naughty:

You must live in that dodgy part of Asia... I doubt I could get one made here for under $5,000 and hours of whinging about how difficult it is :o
