Hi Jason,

I’m somewhat confused with your reasoning and I think you may not be getting the complete picture by making a judgement about surfing in Cape Verde based on "magicseaweed".

- Hot with boardshort temperature waters
So if all the kiters we get in Sao Vicente are either in swimming trunks or shorties and local surfers are in shorties with a sea temp of currently 24-26C – that’s still too cold?

- Surf AND Kite
Kitesurfing in Sao Vicente can be done in one area (Salamansa) that has both a small area of flat water and waves at the point.
Surfing is done in the same bay. The local surfing guys camp out at the point virually every weekend to go surfing.

-3rd world cheap
Yes, possible

-no need of rental vehicle once at location
Yes, possible if staying at Salamansa (although accomodation is super basic)

Your conclusion based on “magicseaweed” is not correct.
Sal, Sao Vicente, Santiago and Santo Antao are part of Africa and is surfed virtually only by locals who do not post nor report on “magicseaweed” (they don’t speak & write English and are not so web-savvy). If you talk to the guys surfing the islands, you’ll come to the conclusion that surfing is mostly practised on Santo Antao, Santiago and Sao Vicente.

I do not know what your standard is of quality surf AND kitesurfing during the same day. What I do know is that when I last shared the waves with 2 locals at the point of Salamansa and passed by (kitesurfing) giving eachother high fives, we were totally stoked and I certainly had quality time. :D

What is perhaps more challenging to find: to have these conditions (wind + waves) at the same spot every day. :-?

Cheers,
Marc

Hi Caesar,

The wind if measured from 10 am to 5pm every day, blows 11-25 knots 85-99% of the time (November - June) BUT: we have moderate La Nina conditions this month so most likely we may dip slightly below the 85% in December.Breakdown of those 11-25 knot days: 60% are in the 16-18 knot range, 5% in the 11-12 knot, 15% in the 13-15 knot and 20% in the 19-25 knot range).
Wind is there when we arrive in the morning at 8 am and is still there when it get's dark. I have not looked at the numbers within a day yet, but I get the impression that the afternoons are slightly better than the mornings.

Air temperature: 24 - 27C
Water temperature: 22 - 26C

A lot of food is imported so if you do not adapt and only stick to Europen food (peanut butter , gouda cheese and chocolate spread for on the bread - for the Dutch  ) then it starts getting expensive.
Going out for a meal:
A meal at the equivalent of a fast food joint costs 1-2 euros (excl drink). A meal at a good value fr money restaurant (incl drink) costs 8 euros. A meal at a highly regarded restaurant costs 9-10 euros. A meal at a super exclusive place geared for the rich (there are few of those) can cost you much more :-?

There is all sorts of accomodation but nothing super exclusive (no Marriott / Hilton) and nothing on a big scale (no mass tourism). A very basic (with toilet in the house :D ) place at Salamansa costs as little as 15 euros per night, a luxurious house at the beach shared with 6 costs 20 euros per night, a very nice appartment with breakfast with view of sea in Mindelo can cost 50 euros per night.

Hi mvandijk,

Thanks for that.

Cheers

Thanks Marc! Excellent reply!!

I didn't say it would be 'too cold', I said it wouldn't be 'hot enough' in winter. I was talking about the air temperature and not the water temperature. Low/mid 20's in the winter isn't that hot and there was no mention of temperatures at night. I've seen some 'hot' destinations get quite cool (low teens) at night!
Regardless, it's boardshort warm waters!!!

We both agree that it is cheap!!

I can easily see how, once you get to Salamansa, you wouldn't need a car. Thanks for confirming!

I knew I shouldn't have mentioned 'Magicseaweed'?! Basically I'm trying to get local opinions so, much appreciated for yours!!

As far as getting surf AND wind the same day, well, that's what would make it a 'Destination that has it all' in my opinion...

I've been eyeing up that place for awhile now and if I didn't live in British Columbia, I'd be booking flights there instead of the Baja all the time...

So far 'Destinations that have it all' are:
-Cabarete, DR
-Salamansa, Sao Vincente, Cape Verde
-????

I´ve been in Cabo verde (2 years ago) and i didn´t like at all.

The wind is so gusty that it scares.

I´ve my little paradise which is called Mancora (Peru)

Hot with boardshort temperature waters

-Surf AND Kite
Kite awesome. It´s so unknown place that no more than 5-7 kites in the beach.

Surf. Peru has the best left wawes in the world, even the longest!

-3rd world cheap
You can eat a full menu with 3 $!!!

-no need of rental vehicle once at location
If staying at Mancora, a car is not needed. If you want to other spots like lobitos or cabo blanco you can take, bus, or taxi (it´s so cheap that it worths)

Nightlife:

Really good nightlife and quality restaurants at low price.

I MISS IT.... :(

search on www.splocs.com since it has kite and surf locations!

check for Kingfisher on Philippines, and other Philipino locations

Taiba, Brazil could also be nice (no rental car!) A surf village, the surf can get 3m on a good day. Normally always at least a 1.5m wave, but maybe not as good as you want it. Kitesurf is the best in NE Brazil for sure, July to January, swell coming Nov-Mar. And a lagoon close by for your girl if she doesn't want to kite on the ocean to improve.

And there are more Brazilian locations further south, like Ibaquera Point (or similar)...

Australia will have many nice places for you, specially Western Oz.

Bali! But lighter wind...

Madagascar! Sri Lanka! Dahkla in Morocco, Mauritius One Eye (Le Morne), that should be awesome for you!

all on www.splocs.com !!!

Please be careful: 99% of folks know Cape Verde as Sal or Boa Vista.
Sao Vicente is TOTALLY different.
The wind at Salamansa, Sao Vicente is cross-shore without obstructions so MUCH more consistent.
