What is the worst Kite injury you've had???

Postby Paracuru KiteVillage » Fri Apr 27, 2012 2:19 pm

Right guys lets hear some of those gruesome stories of how everyone has hurt themselves time after time!

Anything from kitesurfing, snowkiting, powerkite etc etc!

Better yet, tips on how not to inflict the same injury!

Mine: Trimalar fracture on the ankle

How did it happen: Jump, one foot out, other not. > impact > board turning 180 degrees with foot still in it > CRAAAAACKKKKK

What was so bad: having the crack my ankle back to the original position and body dragging back to shore.

How to prevent it: STRAPLESS riding :thumb: hahah or just really loose straps!

Let's hear the next epic fail?

Death? Although one could argue that an accident that will leave you disabled for the rest of your life is much worse.

The rumors of my death are supa exaggerated :D

Rib bruised very badly from supa high gusty wind jump unintentional kite loop splatter :D
Skin sliced off finger from kite line that required supa skin graph repair :D

(Windsurf) high wind long jump off a wave landing where back foot came out of strap
landing with front foot only in strap :nono:
my knee when in and ouchhhhhhh......partial tear of ligaments...no surgery needed
therapy and brace for 6 months

(landboard windsurf) high speed pirouette jibe wipe out
jammed my hand straight down on hard sand and broke right hand longest finger

BTW that hand finger is the exact same i injured later on with sliced finger kite line injury :D

Broken Fibula landing a small jump on a surfboard with straps. My Fibula snapped & half, then twisted. I paddled about 1/2 mile with all my gear. My leg was flopping around & I got tossed in pretty good in the 4' surf.

It was 2 days before Christmas. I thought it was just a torn ligament because the L.A. Lifeguards kept saying, "oh, if it was broken you would be screaming right now". By that point my leg was completely numb below the knee.

I went home & packed it in ice. Woke up the next day, it was swollen to hell. Went to the ER, they gave me a pain prescription (which I didn't have time to fill because it was Christmas eve & I was racing to get to the specialist), then I went to the specialist to have it set.

The guy put me on the table, grabbed my leg & started yanking on it to set it. I could feel the bone twisting & smashing around. Basically he set it without any novicane, advil or any pain medicine because we were all rushing on Christmas eve. Hurt like hell. Took 6 months to get back to semi normal & it's still different than my other leg.

1.Turf toe, took 1 yr to get better, couldn't run 6 months, still hurts sometimes. Tried to bail on a jump strap too big & foot twisted in it. Check your straps/bindings, guys!!!

2.Separated shoulder, yanked on beach while trying to solo land in gusty wind -should have dumped it in the h2o! Got better faster than i thought though...

3.Mid-foot sprain, jammed it in hole in sandbar full of conch shells after getting dumped by a wave. -this was almost a lis-franc fracture (nasty injury), foot swelled up like a football, but I got lucky.... Avoid da conch!

4. Hit head on the beach -dragged when learning, luckily had helmet! Don't get in this situation, have helpers, don't fly kite on the beach when you don't have to etc.
