GPS on Android Samsung Galaxy Smartphone for race tracking.

Postby Mogsy » Fri May 04, 2012 7:38 pm

Just wondering if there is a GPS app for an android smart phone that could be used to track my kitesurf race sessions on my North 69er. I have a H2O Audio arm pack for it so ultimately would be great to have the app telling you your bearing in an earpiece...cool for windshifts up and down wind! I have tried a free gpslogger app but it hasn't been successful. Also do I need a gps dongle for my laptop to download the gps route to match in google maps? Hope somebody knows something about this. Don't want to buy a specific gps device when these smartphones do so much these days.

any sports tracking app will do the job.

The most popular ones are Sports Tracker, Endomondo and Sportypal.

I use SportyPal on my bike and also to record my kite downwinders and it's really interesting to see your track afterwards and check the speed on each tack (when you finish your session the program uploads the data to the website).

Here is a short downwinder I did in April this year: http://sportypal.com/Workouts/Details/2113624

and here's what a wave session looks like: http://sportypal.com/Workouts/Details/2139634

If i was into racing i would definitely track all my sessions. And don't worry about the phone. Just purchase a good watertight pouch and put it inside your wetsuit.
