 Post subject: Upwind Toeside on Directional

For you directional guys, I am having trouble making any upwind progress when i go toe side on my directional. The transition is fine, i just seem to choke the kite as soon as i start heading upwind. It seems i can only go downwind toeside which is fine if i'm doing a downwinder. This is getting frustrating as i'm heading to jupiter and really no chance of a downwinder. Now I have been out in lighter than usual winds 13-15 mph on a 13m (i'm 205lbs), but I can head upwind when i'm heel side no problem. Any pointers would be great...

Take back foot out of strap
Bring closer to front foot that remains in strap
Your front foot in strap needs more weight on the toes by maybe lifting heel and pulling up on strap
Point the nose of board in direction of travel upwind

Are you sure you are riding on your "natural' toeside side
Try to ride on the other tack to test if it is any better

Twist at your waist / make your abs face where you want to go
Let go of your front hand on bar / use only back hand
Lean your body forward and outward ( try touching the water with front hand)

Well that's all for now
I am sure there are more tips that will come from other people :thumb:

SupaEZ is correct, try to put both feet closer to the middle of the board. In the early learning stages you will need one kite size larger to go toeside. Once you have gain a little speed, you must edge upwind and the apparent wind will kick in and keep you going. Try to lean back on your harness and sheet in only as required.

+1 for what supaEZ said

weight forward, just on the toes of the back foot to edge the board a bit

and if you have a way to let the CL slide around your body that helps a lot like:
a loose waist harness
or a Dynabar
or a rope
or any homemade system that will let your hips twist easier

oh, yea, and TOW :thumb:

One of the keys to riding toeside is learning to fly the kite well.
You say the kite chokes- kites don't choke- you are choking the kite by pulling on the bar too much. Thats y flying a bigger kite and one handed can solve the issue but in under powered conditions how you fly the kite is the main concern.
Think about it - there is in no reason why you shouldn't be able to go upwind as well - no difference in board,kite,weight or conditions, the only difference is the stance and position you fly the kite from.
Pay attention to flying the kite from the toeside position, the one handed style opens the body up to a good open stance and makes it harder to choke but also harder to fly the kite well when underpowered. Getting a good body twist when flying two handed can help but hard to get comfy for long periods.
Avoid pulling on the bar to make up for poor balance and technique, try to improve these by not trying to go upwind as much and concentrate on timing and kite control and shortly your toeside will improve.

The above advice sounds spot on: an open stance, but weight 50\50, to avoid choking the kite, fly powered, so on riding toeside upwind you have no choice but to sheet out, usually meaning you are less likely to stall it. Get your weight right out over the rail, ideally so you can easily drag a hand in the water (think Flash Austin !!).

you need a little more wind going upwind toe side. lean in and push on your backfoot...if you ride really powered, it is a like flying low over the water :-)

keep the speed through the turn by adding pressure on your back foot so the kite flies forward in the window.
idea is rail to rail fast.

All sounds right, with one more tip. While twisting your body/hips, focus your eyes on where you want to go. Look a bit more upwind and it will help get you there.
