Yes the kite racing scene started in San Francisco and the kiters are still racing every week after work. The top guys come from SFO or come to train, and the locals are happy to share a beer on the beach after racing..a great crew, miss you all!! Props to Joe Kool, Chip Wassen, John Gomes, John Craig, Jim Kiriakis and a host of other free spirits, free thinkers, now it's time to say thanks for your vision....Lots of Gebi!!

Surely true for the US.
However in Europ, it started back in 2002.
This particular kite race has been held every year in Douarnenez, France ever since and was called at that time ... .... ... ... The Cabrinha Trophy
The Legaignoux brother's http://inflatablekite.com/en/bow-kite/ shows a pict of the 2005 edition.
Paolo Rista participated in the event from 2004 to 2007.
The 2009 edition welcomed 100 riders.
There must have been similar events in Gernany/Italy circa 2004..
