Hi guys, I'm coming to Maui next august (10 to 26). My smallest kite is a 7, do you think it's ok or do I have to rent something smaller? My level is intermediate, 77 kgs.
Thanks a lot!
Paolo

Hi Tautologies, I've already been 3 times in Maui, but for windsurfing. In 2003 the wind was very strong, one day I rode a 63 lts and a 3.3. In 2004 wind was medium, windsurfing sizes from 4.5 to 5.2. In 2006 some days no wind, some days strong, some days medium. I begin to kite later, so I prefer to ask. I already had kite sessions in strong winds (~35 knots) but always in my home spot.

Honestly, get a Slingshot Rally 4 meter & you'll be happier than a pig in s#%t Or, consider renting a sailboard for those uber windy days. I was there recently & was on my 7 for days on end. I wished I had a 5 meter as half those times I was very overpowered on the 7.

Im heading to Honolulu for pretty much the exact same time period... Was planning on taking the 10? Should be good for 20-30? Honolulu has a significantly lower average wind speed yeah??!

Hi Gibilator, I've been two times in Kahilua and the wind was significantly lighter than in Maui, but at that time I was windsurfing so I don't exactly remember what sail size I used. I think it was something around 5.,5, so maybe a 9 or it's ok. It all depends on the day, also in Maui sometimes is very strong sometimes si lighter. Since I never kited in Maui, I prefer to ask because sometimes it's not only a matter of knots, it's the whole condition that must be evaluated and the best thing, in my opinion, is asking to locals as they have an actual knowledge of the spot.

I'm going to Maui for the first time in a few weeks too. Gonna stay for almost 2 weeks, 7/30-8/10 and was considering taking the 7 and 10m. I am 165lbs. Do I even need the 10?? I don't really know which board to take either. I have a Shinn monk 130 and mako 150. I also have a 5'9 Wilson surfboard. I love riding them all in different conditions here in SOBX but don't know which I will enjoy the most in Maui. I probably cant take them all and was thinking just the monk since its easiest to pack, and maybe rent a kitesurfboard a few days. Any advice? Also, what's the best time of day to go? How can I find Downwinder groups? (if any)
