I saw an extruded aluminum strip possibly a foot long which was used to secure the footpads on the board. It almost looked like something from the windsurfing world. The board was a production board (I forget the brand name)
To hold the pads on there was a bolt that went through it with a head under the lip of the extrusion. It was a very elegant easy to adjust setup that would work with any foot pad.
Does anyone know
what it's called and
where to get it or
how to fabricate something like it?

It is just about the same as a bimini track extrusion. aka a small aluminum C channel.
Google for that if you want.
But ask yourself, is it worth the effort installing it right, the added weight etc. ??

I was thinking it would be a lot less futzing around than messing with the bolting and nuts that I am using now and allow ease of adjustment at the beach.

Yeah, or North's "The track" sistem.
I used to do 2 or 3 stance options (with inserts), but since I figured out which position suits my rocker, bottom shape and size the best, I stick to this position. Pads allow you some min. adjustments.
This aluminium C rail could add stifness to the area.
How high would this rail be? What is your core thickness in the area? How much does that leave you? Would you screw it down, fill with wax and than laminate?
I see no sence of doing this, but would deffenitelly be interested to hear how would you install it to the core.
Do you also use boots?

All good points everyone. I hadn't thought about the depth issue. That narrows down what extrusions would be best.

If your core thickness matched the extrusion thickness (3/8") you'd have a huge bonding area with the top and bottom skins.
Still, you can put a lot of inserts in for less effort and money.
