How to fix a hole on the valve

Postby mariod2 » Sat Sep 08, 2012 7:27 pm

On one of my kites there is a hole on the valve rubber, see picture. Does anyone know if it is possible to seal / glue it?

Replacing it would be my plan b.

thanks for any suggestions in advance!

looks like a flexi ion 5 (is it?). not uncommon. you can fix with PU glue like aquaseal.

i have fixed many of them using superglue but in gel form(so it wont go in)
just aply a little dose all over the crack and press it for a minute.
those glues work when all of the air goes off the 2 stucking surfaces.

Gluefix or Aquaseal will do it nicely.

The best Ive seen with that kind of tear is to use a gel type glue like aquaseal but make a slight cup with something like electrical tape to put a bead of the glue all the way around the base of the narrow cylinder where the tear is. Wrap a wrap of the tape around the large diameter of the base so that just a bit of the tape is extending past the base and forms a shallow cup all the way around. Fill the cup with aquaseal and let it set for about 24 hours. Try not to get any bubbles in the glue as they will expand as the glue cures, so dont over do it with the glue, just a mm or so all the way around the base of the nipple in the cup. Once fully cured you can remove the tape and trim away any aquaseal if necessary. Done well its like extending the thicker portion of the nozzle by a mm or so and it's structure helps the repair holds a little longer than if you just put glue in the crack. It supports the whole narrow portion of the nozzle a bit so the same type of tear is less likely in the future. Did one this spring that is holding just fine.

Don't you prefer to just replace the valve?
I've purchased after market valves that are easily applied.

appreciate the feedback.

I will try so, will rather not try to replace the valve unless the method fails.

Cheers!

No need to replace the valve. Have done it a few times over the years and it doesn't fail. It's a common fix.
