5 meter lines

Postby rightguard » Sun Sep 09, 2012 8:11 am

Watched Wainman go out the other day with 5 meter lines. Funniest launch I've ever seen. Walked up with kite and bar in same hand, board in the other hand. Throws the kite up into the air keeping the bar in his hands. Kite catches the air and he is off.

Landed like he was shot putting... Swings the kite around till it was upwind and flops it on the beach.

Short lines looked like a ton of fun.

He's a freak though! I remember being on Maui back when he was riding 12" long boards and totally ripping. He wouldn't be half the rider he is without his "unique" personality/imagination.I think he might be an alien.

What size kite was he using? And in what winds?

I tried flying my 7.5m Mr Green kite on 7m lines last week. It was... interesting. The wind was a bit borderline for that kitesize, so it was tough to do waterstarts and get planing given the very short powerstroke that resulted from the 7m lines. To get planing I had to loop the kite, but at first a wingtip kept catching on the water every time I tried looping. In the end, the only way I could loop the kite around for a waterstart was by grabbing hold of a bunch of steering line and pulling hard to loop the kite a few times. And, once up and riding, I had a hard time doing transitions.

I'd like to try it again, though, in higher windspeeds. I have a feeling that 7m lines could be pretty awesome in small waves in strong wind. Also, I'd really like to loop the kite underneath me during a jump, at least once. :cool2: That's something I've never pulled off before. I'll probably end up slamming myself silly trying it, but hey, some things are worth it

I think it was 7.5m kite, good wind. He seemed to have no problem. Wasn't watching that much but he was out for a while and looked totally normal.

He was riding strapless surfboard... Didn't see him jump at all.
