Which surf to start and be happy??? WAM, WHIP, Tyrant?

Postby gvironda » Wed Sep 12, 2012 12:59 pm

Hi guys
After 2 weeks with a TT in decent waves this summer, I understood that only a SURF can open me the doors of pure happyness :-)

Can you help me choose the right board?
I am thinking about:
- North WAM (I can find good stuff used in 6'0, nothing in 5'10)
- North WHIP (good price at 5'8)
- SS Tyrant (I got a VERY good price for the 5' 10)

I am 178cm (5'8) and 70kg (150lbs).
Would ride mainly in small waves, messy chop, with 15-20 knots.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Beppe

Beppe-

I know nothing about the SS board, but between the WAM and the Whip, I'd probably recommend you go with the Whip. It's meant for smaller, mushier surf. The 5'8" is a little on the big side for you, but the board is really easy to throw around, it doesn't sound like you're in nuking winds, and since it'll be your first board and you're on mushy stuff it'll give you a little more float and be a little more forgiving.

Definitely, I'd recommend that Whip. Especially if you've got a deal on it.

Hope this helps.

Go with the Whip. X-Surf is a 5'11"... Too big. And yes, Whip is more popular and well known and will probably give you better and easier resale.

I am 75 kg and ride the Whip 5'7" 2011 with my 12 or 10 Rebels 2011 from 12 to 20 knots

I like the width of the board i have now 18 5/8"...so if i had to upgrade i would get the 5'8" 2012

It is 18 3/4" wide..................the 5'6" is narrower at 18 1/4" wide

gvironda: I'm exactly your size............ I haven't much time on the other boards you mentioned, but

I have a 5'4" 2012 Whip and it is " pure happiness " and the harder you ride it the happier you'll get

and not just in light winds, it truly is a great all around board............plus it's so light weight that for jumping and freestyle'in, you couldn't ask for a better ride !

Slingshot Celeritas should also be considered (see past reviews on kiteforum) for the riding conditions you have described.
I ride messy lake chop and small to medium waves (Barbados) and it performs well in these conditions. Extra width helps when learning transitions.

I have a question as well. Suppose I go with the Celeritas. I am 6'3" 195lbs. What size board would I go for? I am looking for my first surfboard to kite with. Would I chose the 5'6"; 5:8" or 5'11"??
