Light wind kite comments please

Postby Kurt » Sat Oct 06, 2012 11:50 pm

A sad day - my 17 waroo pro is dead. Never found a 17 as good.
Anyway any comments on the following other than my own would be great.
not looking at other brands due to availability / service / logistics etc.
Ozone edge 17 - awesome low end but ride fast only and power won't turn off
Ozone zephyr 17 - nice kite but no wow factor. Fat LE
Best ts 2 17 - ts 1 nice but will they be around in 12 months!!
North dyno - overpriced and lost my faith years ago but reads well on the net but sounds a bit like edge in that you need to ride fast and straight?

Any comments on above kites appreciated.

+1 for Turbine 17m. Great kite. Turns fast for a 17, nice upwind ability. Flys great in 8 - 15 knots

What kind of riding are you looking to do?
On what board?
In how much wind as your low end?
What's your weight?

That info will all factor in to which one is best for you.

I've been riding for nearly ten years.
Like freeride old school riding (andy hurdman, old adam kosh style is my favourite)
Had a school and have sold a few brands over the years.
Now retired but enjoy riding small surf downwinders and flat water.
10Hp, 11 and 13 edges, custom tt and underground srf 148.
Custom bar sets with qpro lines.

I have assesed all brands and want to choose from my choices not any others as stated.
I could go on about brand quality and politics but wont.......

If anyone has ridden any or all of my choices in the lastest models please comment.

Fair enough!

I'd go the Dyno. Hate the Ozone bar, don't like Best. Pretty simple choice for me

I dunno if I hadn't enough wind for a 13m Edge I'd just go kick a soccer ball around, or hang out with your wife or something.

I owned the Core XR 17 LW and I liked it, pretty fast for the size and good wind range. Now I have the 15, lighter and faster, must have one more knot to stay upwind, I think about steady 9 with a dedicated lw TT, about 10 with a standard TT, don't know with a surfboard or a raceboard. I never rode the Zephyr but I have the feeling it's probably the best light wind kite out there if you're exprerienced.

Thanks for the comments so far.....
Dirk I hear you. I wouldn't head out for a kite when the forecast is light.
It's more of a luxury to have in the back of the car when you get to the beach and the forecast was 15-20kts and you get 12-15kts and you have driven a while so may as well get wet.
I am also 6ft 95kg so not a blessed kiter by any means.

I don't like going out under powered anytime. To me there is a difference about going out kiting and kiting powered up.

Spent a fair bit of time on the TS 1 17m yesterday and it felt similar to the zephyr performance wise.

Has anyone tried both the new 17 edge and dyno back to back - Toby? or can't you say 8)
