Mark, keep us posted? Would be interested in your opinion/decision...Can you demo any of the boards mentioned? What are you leaning towards?? What are the typical conditions you ride? Chop/Flat/ Waves, wind strength / kite size?
Would be surprised if you find a more forgiving board than the Monk, even on flat hard landings !
Trust me I know.
P.S. not affiliated with Shinn, just think it's a superb piece of kit.

Right now for my TT I have a Mako King and the landings are hard on my knees. i.e. older guy with scoped knees syndrome... I'd like to be able to get out past my shore break and ride through chop and jump high off of waves and rollers (inland lake sailing). I think I need a little length (or width) for stability.

A board that I have recently tried and liked was the Crazyfly Raptor Pro (Carbon fiber). I just loved it's lightness and feel. Don't know if it's the ultimate jumper though which is why I'd like to know if there's any other contenders - thanks...
Ok Mark, here are my 2 Cents too: Shinn Monk (the one with the gorilla graphic on the bottom!!! ). Let me know if you find it anywhere because I want more of them. It is sold out worldwide.
And hey, I'm not that young anymore either.

Cheers

Dear Mr. Chatwin,
Did I provide you with a list of boards that I have experience with, that will fill your need? ...yes
Did I convey my experience with the original board in question? ...yes
Agree that it jumps like shit in my experience, thus commiserating your experience? ....yes
Did I show proper sympathy for your old and bad knees? ....yes
Sorry you have no sense of humor, go buy some more gear, it'll make you feel better.
I like Kami, he is a favorite forum member,...you on the other hand..:baby:

get a smaller board dumbass.

you're complaining about a mako king landing hard. well gee I wonder if that has something to do with the amount of surface area smacking the water?

c'mon guys this isn't rocket science. which hurts worse a pencil dive or a belly flop.

Think of the mako king as a belly flop. :naughty:

Yeh I ride in lake chop, 1-4ft waves. Wind direction has some onshore angle to it so going out you can get some great launchpads. They're rollers so you have some smooth landings between the rollers. Sometimes troughs are deep. Conditions are usually 13m and on good days 9m. I'm leaning towards any of the boards mentioned here. Shinn stuff, UG Flex, and even the Raptor. Tough to demo stuff since it's a small town far away from anything...

I even am not opposed to the surfboard idea since I got a buddy who jumps big with his Litewave 5'8" Quad. I just think for big jumps a little board doesn't catch the wind as much. Perhaps a little surfboard with enough tail width for planing like Celeritas/Whip.

I have the feeling of that Raptor Carbon in my mind and back to back with many other TT's like my friend's North Gonzales and another's Naish Soul the Raptor was on another level.

I appreciate all the board recs from everyone! Basically a lot of similar names came up and that really helps to limit the search...

Old N Broken - while I appreciated your post on page 2 which was very informative, your post on page 3 ending with "You're Welcome" was you chiming back in to agree with your crony friend Kami. Thanks though for page 2!

And CJ though I didn't like the "dumbass" part I'm getting a chuckle! I can just see you getting pulled over for a parking ticket and then the cop asks "Do you know why I pulled you over"? "No dumbass"! Another 20-something handcuffed on the side of the street.

markchatwin wrote:OldNBroken and Kamikuza - while I realize it's hip to be "quippy" with your posts and cartoonish with your favorite little icons I am thankful to the guys (see some thanks on page 1) that actually answered the question with some logic and focus. One read through the thread and it's easy to see who the "mature" kiters are and those that just don't get enough laughs in the real world.

There's plenty of threads for releasing your Barney Fife senses of humor into. Oops that shows my age...
The world needs more laughs! and smilies :D but not as many as SupaEZ uses :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :naughty:

I've got a dicky ankle can't land hard on or it pains me something fierce... I have more issues with load'n'pops (less support by the kite) than I do with sent jumps though. In fact, most of my sent jumps have super-soft landings cos I've got (I think!) a good technique.

But if I bork it up and are coming down too hard'n'fast, I 'bail' and splash down ass first, rather than risk landing on the bum ankle and crying like a sissy for 10 minutes...

I don't think board makes much of a difference, if you're plummeting back onto the water! I have a Mako too. And ride in lake chop, onshore winds...

ohh reallly brooooo?

haha glad it made you chuckle. I was trying to be a bit ridiculous since my previous post went pretty much unnoticed. I was serious earlier. I know it sounds crazy to consider a wakestyle board at your age but give the Tona pop a look. Its what I ride and I think it does exactly what you want. Probably better then this Monk business nobody except people on kiteforum seem to be talking about.

Oh yeah and for the record I used to ride the Xenon Laluz. which many said was better then the monk. Yes the laluz was comfy in chop but it still flattened out and jarred my knees on any big landing. All flexy kite boards are going to do that.

Also I think its funny everybody keeps saying the Shinn Monk since I have never seen one in person. In fact I don't think anybody in the northwest here has one. Makes me think everybody in the world who has a shinn monk is in this thread.

Anyway if you're big into carving up lake swell and you like the idea of riding a surfboard I say consider the litewave DV8. Its a surfboard shape but its built to work for jumping and riding chop. basically it has a ton of flex. like the amount of flex a twin would have. Worth checking into if you haven't already. If you have check again ;)

For a twin I think you can't go wrong with a wakestyle board. even with straps. Its the only way to get smooth powered landings IMO. Tona Pop, Cabrinha Custom or North Gambler. They're all good :remybussi:

I know this industry better then most. Shit I'm almost a 30 something....Besides the cop would be the one in handcuffs! What?

By default were all dumbasses for hanging out on kookforum. Lets face it. If we didn't have to work in public offices we'd probably just spent our time doing much more productive things like looking at porn instead. right? ahhaha you know its true :naughty:

Where is the northwest? It might be time to step out of your little square there.
I know 4 residents of Cumbuco (a small little town somewhere on the Brazilian coast) who have the Shinn Monk (the one with the gorilla graphic) and all of them love it and would not change it with any other board.

Cheers

Nice try. Some of the greatest kite brands in the world call the nw home. Others come here to ride our epic conditions.

I suppose all 5 of you love to hang out and talk about how smart you are for owning the same board too. 4 guys in Brazil.... Really? I guess that means it's super popular. I'll bet it does feel nice to ride in Brazil. But so would any board in those conditions.

Btw I get around plenty.

Mr. Chatwin-
My post on page three was not related to Kamikuza's post.
The "your welcome" was a reminder that you started this thread for advise, and got a lot of good stuff from a lot of people, and you come back and complain about what people said, instead of thanking anybody for the useful information you did get.
And how old are your knees anyway? or what did you do to them?

C Johnson-I owned the Monk, and my best bud owns a Luluz, in comparison I prefer the Monk in every aspect. My local crew has four Shinn boards currently.
There are a bunch of Shinn dealers in USA, more concentrated up and down the west coast than the rest of the country, like with every brand.
The chit chat about the the Monk on this forum is nothing compared to the sixty pages about Shinn boards on the UK Kite Forum and the dozen or two pages on SeaBreeze forum for our Aussie friends. They don't talk about them much on Kite Scoop though.
They sell a lot of Shinn boards in UK and Europe, the numbers are building in USA now pretty good, according to what I've been told. Only been here two or three years, I think.
Love the looks and concept of the Tona Pop.
